    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

time for a bit of an update.. Got the pump cleaned up, a bath in CLR took the accumulated "lake crud" out of the bronze casting, and it looks and feels like new again. Reassembled the pump, and reinstalled it. Fired the boat up on water, and it backfired a bit through the carb.... blew out a...

83 Chevy 350 SB valve springs w uneven heights? Is that normal?

it looks to me that you have rotators on the exhaust valves. This would be completely normal, and they do sit a bit higher than the plain keeper. Main thing is that the stem that the rocker arm pushes on is approximately the same height.

    MOTOR SWAP

you CAN swap in a 4.3 for your 5.7, but the main question is why? the engine will physically bolt up to the bellhousing drive. main differences are that you will likely need to move your motor mounts back a few inches, and you will need to source an appropriate intake. Most if not all of the...

Boating with small children ( Toddlers ) Best Life Vest.

been taking our son out since he was little.... when he was small enough, we put him in his life jacket (required in AZ under 18) and he sat in his car carrier. When a bit older, he sat with either mom or I with his jacket on. We just got them (and ours) from Bass Pro. Easy enough to test fit...

1992 Four Winns Horizon 190 with OMC Cobra 5.0L: Engine Oil and Outdrive Oil recommendations?

I also use the 15w40 (either Delo or Rotella) in my boats (and most of my other vehicles as well). Again, I also use a synthetic gear oil in my outdrives..... Some may argue, but more equipment has been ruined by NO OIL, than has ever been damaged by the WRONG OIL.... change it often, check it...

Casting numbers help omc cobra 5.0 HO motor thought 1993

not real sure what the question is here.... the casting number on the intake manifold starting in D3OE is a factory Ford casting number, and will be found on many Ford manifolds, not just in boats. the 5.0l designates it as a 5.0l Ford cast block. The OMC tag is relatively easy to decode using...

Stupid question…… garboard drain plug size

Simple, but stupid question….. what size pipe plug are the screw in garboard drain plugs usually….. new boat doesn’t have one with it, Wally World doesn’t stock them here, and I’ll be damned if I drive 100 miles to get one from Bass Pro…. I have an Ace hardware right down the street, and IIRC a...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

and onto the engine driven seawater pump. Loads easier to service than the "outboard" style of the Mercruiser.... two bolts, and two hose clamps and its off..... Impeller is toast... not cracked, but has taken a pretty good "set" due to not moving really since 2017. Front seal is toast.. it...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

splines were still nice and sharp (factory looking, not worn sharp) on both sides. I was expecting a little resistance when inserting, but really didnt feel anything. the grease says it was in the coupler, the splines didnt look worn, either my tool is a bit undersized (thats what She said....)...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

it is generally regarded as if there is "any resistance" that an adjustment needs to be made. Mine slipped in so easy that I didnt think it was fully seated...... it rotated as easily as moving the gimbal bearing by hand (so any resistance over and above the gimbal bearing itself is "bad") I...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

I ended up just wrasslin it into position. once I got the trailer tail high enough for it to be a straight shot, it went right in. Its a little disconcerting when it stops shy of fully mated, but the design of the bellows needs that last little bit snugged up with the bolts to compress the...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

yeah, this is a cone clutch model, the adjustment is simple. Fasten in the cable, and adjust it til it fits in the hole in neutral.... for shits and giggles ill try it in all 3 positions to ensure my shifter is working properly. Last time I had the Mercruiser out, I fought it for over an hour...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

well, its on to the next phase.... maintenance... Pulled the outdrive this morning to check for alignment and to service the bellows (who knows when they were done last, its been off the water since 2017...) Everything came apart as anticipated. Bellows were still "good" but getting old...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

ALL RIGHTY THEN!!!!! got an early start, and installed all the rest of the crap I hadnt done yet. Retorqued the rocker nuts, installed valve cover gaskets, exhaust and carburetor. Put a shot of 50:1 down the yap (because I didnt have any other fuel.... ) and it barked right off. Only let it run...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

thats the thing with ANY carburetor... finding one unmolested is about as rare as balls on a rocking horse... for the Qjet and 2jet, we are at or quickly approaching 40 years since the last ones rolled off the assembly line. A Holley you can get brand new still, but finding someone who TRULY...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

Yeah, getting these Holley gaskets off was a nightmare. Left the parts for a few days soaking in my ultrasonic, and were still a bear. Qjets can be a good carb, but many have become bitsers over the years. Once different from their original calibration, they are a crapshoot. The influx of...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

yeah, as long as parts actually show up, progress can be made. Still had some time on lunch, so I got the carb reassembled as well. Holleys are a LOT easier than a 2jet or Qjet.... no choosing which gasket is the right one, when your original is destroyed.... only one choice with the Holley....
