    1990 Bayliner 2651 resto

Agree - cut the fiberglass out of the keyhole. Install the new transom wood, glass it in place, then you can glass the inside of the keyhole.

There is definitely a learning curve to using contact cement, but once you understand it, it's great stuff.

The "pin" in a blind aluminum rivet is the steel core used to mushroom out the back side of the rivet when you pull it to set it. The reason the drill bit walks off is because it's a steel pin inside of a soft aluminum rivet. Usually I take a small drift punch and a hammer and knock the pins...

Advice on transom , stringers and floor rebuild

I went with 3/4" plywood for my sun-pad too.

    Transom Repair 1984 Bomber Scout

If you love this boat enough to put a few (several?) thousand dollars and a few hundred hours into the repair of, pull the rub rail, pop the cap, take dimensions, demo, and rebuild. Otherwise, it may be a better option to spend your efforts and money on a boat in better shape.

I wouldn't sweat it, since it'll be covered by the rub rail. Brace yourself for further disappointment with OEM boat manufacturing practices as you continue to dig in.

    Trim up not working.

Trailer switch raises the drive with no limit on where it will stop until its all the way up. Trim up button raises the drive but stops when the trim limit switch is tripped, so you don't trim up too far with the engine running. Sounds like your trim limit switch may be out of adjustment or the...

When I de-capped mine, it seemed like the hull bowed outward coming from near where the floor attaches (at the chines). I did not build a cradle or do internal bracing - just crossed my fingers and restored the hull on my bunk trailer. I did take width measurements every foot immediately after...

That's crappy. What brand / supplier did that float come from so we know to stay away?

Thanks! Yes it was a labor of love, and it was all worth it in the end. Your project is looking great, keep up the good work.

    Keel damaged

Grind/sand and fill with your gelcoat paste, or make your own next time by adding some cabosil to regular gelcoat. Wet sand and buff to fair it in to the surrounding areas.

Suggestions for fiberglass repair along the keel

Grind it out to fair it to the surrounding surfaces, tape it off, and apply some white gelcoat thickened with cabosil. Wet sand and buff to taste. Unless you're a stickler, no need to try to color match since it's on the bottom of the hull and nobody is likely to ever see it.

    Polyester resin cracked while curing

Glass over it and you'll be fine. Too hot of a mixture or too big of a glob of PB to cure at once will cause that.

Looks good. Biscuit cutter's a handy tool that I've never had the pleasure of owning. I did scarf joints to stretch my 8 ft plywood to 12 ft to make stringers.

Noise from engine compartment when steering left or right

If the noise is constant while holding a turn and you don't have power steering, it's probably gimbal or u-joints. Buy an alignment tool, pull the drive, and inspect the gimbal bearing alignment and inspect the u-joints. Does the noise change based on how you have the drive trimmed? Even...

2002 Mastercraft 5.7 harmonic balancer moving in and out

I'd be buying a Scat 383 rotating assembly and taking the block to a competent machine shop, letting them know the situation so they can inspect for any damage.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Another great weekend at my brother's lake house is in the books. I spent nearly the entire month of July in SoCal for work so coming back to The South's humidity, rain, and heat was a rude awakening, but it sure was nice to be back behind the wheel of the Power Play. The boat ran out great...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

I was thinking about that the other day while in the garage. I foamed my hull in the winter and had to burn kerosene and use my heat pump to get my garage up to 89F so I could pour foam. Now it easily gets up over that on it's own. 😂

    It's Time!

I pulled the cap on my 19 ft boat amd it wasnt too bad. Build a stand, separate the cap from the hull and slide in four long (10 ft) 2x4's, then have a cookout and invite 7 friends over to eat, drink a few beers, and spend 15 minutes pulling the cap and walking it back to the stand you built...

    Poor man’s boat - 1988 sea Ray weekender 230

The gimbal ring is broken in half. Whether it was damaged pulling it out of the water or because it hit something like a submerged log, breaking a gimbal ring could mean the transom was heavily stressed. Do some careful looking inside for cracks, and I agree - test drill near the drain hole at...
