    Out drive oil

I think the reservoir is great. At a glance you can check your oil level. Without it, you are blind. Your drive could run dry and you won't know until it's too late. Plus, as stated, you have all that extra lube in there, just in case.

Low voltage to accessories from ignition switch

Your readings should be good as long as your using the same ground point for your tester's ground lead for testing both positive points.

Stalls in Reverse with Trim Up

That doesn't sound normal, but I'll follow while waiting for the experts reply. I do know that you shouldn't run your engine with your drive in trailer position. Too much if an angle for the u-joints. Too much stress. I know you said half way. So as long as your trim limit switch is set...

    Exhaust Bellows

This is why it's never good to make a sudden stop when you are at a decent speed. Water will rush toward your stern and up through the exhaust. Always power down gradually, never suddenly. This is where the exhaust shutters come into play, sometimes called flappers. They help against backflow...

    MC-1 Exhaust Bellows Slipping Off.

Waiting for the experts to help you out. I don't know anything about an MC-1 or if this pertains to one, but... My exhaust bellows on my alpha 1 gen 2 popped off too. It was such a pain, I just left it. It's basically acting as an exhaust tube. It doesn't seem to be any louder to me. A...

    DIY water pump/Impeller 1st Timer

Give us a break, I didn't know about JIS until yesterday! Thanks to Matt, I learned something new. Maybe because I never owned any Japanese motors. I don't think any of my Fords, Chevys or Pontiacs had them. I don't think my Mercruiser/Alpha has them, or does it? No disrespect, enlighten me...

Bilge pump runs does not pump

Is the hose still connected to the pump? When you say a little shot of water comes out, is that right at the pump with the hose disconnected or outside the boat at the through the hull fitting? If it's outside the boat: Could the hose be the problem? Clogged? Kinked? Could the hose have a...

Tying down a motorcycle for transport

When you tie it down, make sure you fully compress the suspension. You want it tight without any bounce.

Andersen windows. Trying to get creative here.

How about a wooden dowel? Buy a short piece and cut a bunch of them out. If you want to get fancy, round off the end a bit and drill a hole through it. Bolt it on with an 8/32" machine screw and nut. Or I guess you could just hold in on with a wood screw, sort of like your wirenut picture...

Are surge brakes always a PIA?

    DIY water pump/Impeller 1st Timer

Wow! I never heard of this. I thank you for that very informative article. I guess that's why I've encountered "phillips head" screws that none of my screwdrivers would properly fit. You never stop learning! And the comments at the bottom made me laugh because I'm also 63!!!!! Crazy....right?

Are surge brakes always a PIA?

I ditched my surge brakes last year. My surge brake master cylinder was full of rust and basically the whole system was in disrepair. Plus, there's no mechanical job I hate more than bleeding brakes! Considering what it would have cost to replace the surge components, I decided to change over...

2 cycle oil for my garden tools

Thanks for the responses! I wasn't sure if all 2 cycle oils were the same and that I could use any available chart to administer the proper ratio. I figured there can't be much difference between a 40:1 and a 50:1 mix anyway. The thing that got me was there was no mention on that bottle...

    Plating, not the eating type

Very interesting! I remember back in school, not sure if was middle school or high school, doing some electroplating in science class. That was many moons ago. (I'm in my 60's now) I doubt anything like this is still taught nowadays. Too much of a safety issue. Funny thing is. It might have...

2 cycle oil for my garden tools

I'm almost out of 2 cycle oil. The one I have is from Ace Hardware. It has that funny squeeze bottle with the side compartment for measuring the oil. There's a chart on the bottle giving the amount of oil to use for whatever ratio your machine uses. I have some machines that are 40:1 and some...

Lost Propulsion! Need Help! Reply ASAP!!

My boat is also a 185. Different manufacturer, but same size. It's very easy to trailer. Once you get the trailer and it's properly setup for your boat, you will easily be able to pull it out at any given time. (As long as your vehicle is up to it). There are so many maintenance items you...
