I Just Bought My First Boat. 1997 Sea Ray 175 3.0LX A1 G2. WHERE TO START PLEASE HELP!!

We're saying (well...at least I am) that he should at least check the condition of the transom with a simple drill test. He said this is his first boat and his thread title is "where to start please". Just trying to make sure he doesn't spend hundreds of dollars on the engine & drive only to...

I Just Bought My First Boat. 1997 Sea Ray 175 3.0LX A1 G2. WHERE TO START PLEASE HELP!!

Your symptom is that your boat has a wood structure, is 25 years old, and has a known period of time in its life where it was stored poorly. Don't fear drilling the holes...fear what you're likely to find. 😂 Here is my thread where I drilled holes. My transom wasn't rotten to the point of...

Two Layers of 3/4 CSM versus One Layer of 1.5 CSM

On the floor I did butt joints on my 1708 where the tabbing met the main piece of 1708 that covered the floor, and overlapped my CSM edges by about 2 inches with torn / hairy edges. You can't see the seams if you do it this way. The gelcoat will fill in the CSM fairly well, though for perfection...

New member - deck install panga

I didn't like the fin roller. I had better luck rolling out bubbles with the 4" mohair rollers I was using and tapping with the straight cut chip brushes.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Took the boat out on the lake yesterday for Mother's Day - all went well. Water's still a little chilly for swimming, but it was nice to just be out. Today I worked on a project for a cell phone holder on my dash. I use the Navionics app for charts, and trying to balance the phone on the...

I'd say take a look at your trailer. If you've 4+ bunks that hold the majority of the boat and they are in good shape, with no pressure on the hull from any rollers, you can roll the dice and rebuild on the trailer with no cradle - that's what I did. When I pulled the cap, I measured widths of...

Can the base of engine work? Two to bolts under engine are rusted and can

I bought my tools from Amazon, made by MBS Manufacturing: puller, driver, and alignment bar. It all worked. Yes, you have to mark/drill the hole in the alignment bar to mount the driver.

My original center stringers was mahogany, but I went back with ACX plywood for all my stringers, bulkhead, and transom, and fully encapsulated it all with 1708 and poly resin. I would recommend you use ACX for everything. And if you need a piece longer than a standard sheet of plywood (96")...

Find a local hardwood center and buy some Sapele Mahogany. Strong and rot resistant.

    Alpha one lower shift cable

I agree with Rick. The new cable appears to have a larger thread diameter than the original cable.

    Stringer encapsulation.( Air pockets.)

On my stringers, the tightest radius i could do on an outside corner with 1708 was 1/4". 3/8" worked better / was easier. 1/8" gave me voids. The length of the cloth going down the side of the stringers beyond the radius plays a role too. Too short and the part bending around the edges will peel...

    Stringer encapsulation.( Air pockets.)

I'm not a fan of those large bubbles on the edge of the board. I'd probably sand/grind those off and re-do those small areas, personally. Or, Froggy's suggestion may work too. Pre-wet your glass before laying it on the stringer, and pre-wet the stringer surface. When you are laying strips of...

    bellows house leaking

If you don't have it, buy an alignment tool - you can get these with the driver attachment to drive in the new gimbal bearing. I also bought a gimbal bearing puller tool - mine was so tight it would have been miserable to pull with a slide hammer. You may want a flexible shaft screwdriver to...
