Yamaha 8hp (model 8SF, 1989) with water in cylinders

Hi. I have two of these incredible engines in the garage. In my opinion, one of the very best outboard engines ever made. I’ve a 1993 and a 1999 model. These things are worth a fortune in good order these days..especially the later of them and in good order. It takes more than a bit of water in...

Fresh water corrosion and anode choices…

Are you in a marina or on a jetty with power supply nearby ? Poorly earthed marina jetty can do this. Not an engine I’m familiar with at all..but on some engines I know of…where that water is coming out…is usually where the gear oil drain screw is. Surely not the case on yours though ??

What could have caused this to happen?

Bad or failed route to earth…or any other larger load or power demanding component…like regulator, coils…starter or trim motor. Relay perhaps too. Time for some fault finding with a multimeter

my 115efi mercury idles high. Can I adjust it lower, and how?

Really depends what age she is. If it’s a fairly modern efi…it’s not usually something that’s manually adjusted. It’s controlled by the ecu, fed by and determined by the input from many ancillary sensors. An IAC failure would be the most common cause of such a thing, on an efi.

    Mariner HP & Model decode.

It will be a Yamaha engine, if she’s of an age from before around 83/84…maybe even just after perhaps. But certainly early 80’s and late 70’s 8hp mariners were the Yamaha engine. As were a few others around that size too. I’d be able to tell for certain, from a picture of her.

Low RPM on a new outboard...All suggestions welcome

As above for sure. All too often, quite common and absolutely wrong to assume that the prop from a previous engine, should be just fine on a new engine. Even if the same apparent HP. Haven’t looked it up or haven’t even an incline for sure…but there is a high chance that not only the rpm range...

anyone know why I've no tell tail water while flushing my kicker

See that fitting there you have. The male hose quick connect. For certain, you will get a female connector on there…but I have a feeling that that fitting you have there, may have been fitted additionally by someone previously perhaps. It may well unscrew from a thread there. Leaving you with...

anyone know why I've no tell tail water while flushing my kicker

That actually is the same as mine. It’s the standard garden hose female fitting that goes on there. Quick connect thing. Or it is where I am anyway. See picture below that goes onto the hose and the quick connect snaps onto that fitting on the engine.

anyone know why I've no tell tail water while flushing my kicker

Assume so, but not certain to be honest. Mine has a pull out cover on it and slightly different I’d say. 2016 mercury 115. Have a look in the manual. Should be the usual garden hose fitting

    350Magmpi

161 is about exactly the temperature your engine block and coolant water temp will be…no doubt having a conductive heat transfer to anything close by or attached to. 160 t stat spec might just about back up my thinking perhaps.

anyone know why I've no tell tail water while flushing my kicker

The newer type mercs with flushing hose attachment type port, won’t flood the cylinders. If that helps you any.

anyone know why I've no tell tail water while flushing my kicker

How are you flushing it ? With the muffs or is she of an era to feature a flushing port not requiring the engine to be ran. Depending on the size of the engine, most flushing muffs on small engines really struggle to form a good seal, should it be the former of the two above. Has flushing been...

Yamaha 90 2 Stroke No Spark

Good info. Only mentioned it because I’m aware some larger Yamaha (models older than this 90 even) with a cdi, have a TPS on them.

Late 90s seadoos the right choice?

Personally I’d rather a Yamaha 2 stroke at that kind of range of skis. Much better built in general. I had a gtx di. Ram well and strong until it didn’t. Seat seal was an issue too. Anytime it went on its side and not righted quickly..it literally tried to sink. But like any of these 2 strokes...

How To Plug An Old Engine Into NMEA 2K

You can use the original sender units on the engine. Just need to convert and calibrate the signal from them to suit. Thought I’d mention, if it’s helps.

Yamaha 90 2 Stroke No Spark

Shift switch it’s called I’m sure. Shift interrupt on other models perhaps.

    93 vp aq570 with 280 drive hydrolocked??

Hey…if it works, it works…but certainly not the conventional way. I thought it might suffer lack of flow that way or disturbed flow at the least. Yeah. There is a blank fitting on the circ pump and one also behind the t stat on the top of the engine. That’s what they are for. Just so it’s pumped...

How To Plug An Old Engine Into NMEA 2K

Can’t beat ecu provided data on injector pulses and rpms to be honest.

    93 vp aq570 with 280 drive hydrolocked??

It usually comes off the designed fittings on the water circ pump and back to the top just behind it. There are dedicated fittings there for just that.

Thanks also for this. It’s definitely the larger gearcase anyway, just with the props I’ve tan on it. Must find out more when next at it
