    86 Mercury 25XD Wont Run.

Ok. So that particular remote box you have there. Most of a certain age I know the same..are very very stiff to open beyond a certain point. If you pull it up with a little more force…it will free off I’m sure. Very common

    86 Mercury 25XD Wont Run.

Ok. Excellent. So are you using the choke manually then ? With some throttle opened up to her ? Vent on the tank opened too obviously

SAE j1171 trim motor. Pressurized air in reservoir. Leg falling slowly

Hi. This is extremely common an issue with this particular model. It’s almost exclusively caused by the small check valve balls passing and not holding as they should. Your situation of it dropping down but not externally leaking or losing oil…is the tell tale sign of it.

    Intake 496 Magnum 2007

That’s the IAC filter, I’d imagine

    Serial number through diagnostic tool?

I’d imagine so. I certainly know for sure that the engine serial details and specs are shown on screen, when you have the vessel view mobile device fitted to the mpi.

2000 Mercruiser 5.0 Thunderbolt 5 Ignition idle issue.

Is this a tks ? Regardless, I’d suggest you might have a fuel delivery or quality issue. I’d also check the plugs for condition and/or signs of water ingress, perhaps from manifolds or similar..causing less than idle running at low rpm.

    86 Mercury 25XD Wont Run.

Just saw your previous post regarding this engine. In your picture there, that remote control you have fitted. Has a push key choke. Are you using this to help her fire up and run ? Apologies if you are and well aware of such things.

    86 Mercury 25XD Wont Run.

I’d take the carb off again. But before that, can I be cheeky enough to ask if you’re familiar with this engine in a normal and running properly state ? Or is it new to you and just trying to get it running ? If the latter, can I ask if you are maybe leaving the choke on too long ? Or if you’re...

    Trim problems

You sure it’s not an older arrangement that may mean you are actually pushing the trim up and trailer button (both will move the drive upwards), rather than presuming it’s the up and down button ? Any pics of the arrangement?

    Please help

Could rev as covered in above reply…I’d also throw in that it could be a belt/alternator issue too.

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

Hi. Is it continuing to run, but running very poorly and rough, when this happens ? I’ve seen that happen before when key turned off..keeps running for a while after. This is a result of either timing or fuel issues.

60hp 4 stroke shuts down above 3000 rpm

Hi. You sure it’s maybe not loosing water pick up (just being sometimes and issue with pontoons and an engine that’s maybe not set up well on the back) and overheating, alarming and going into guardian mode ? Failing that…is it maybe having issues with the neutral safety switch ?

    Starts smooth, then rough, dies

Hi. Have a look at the shift switch down the starboard side lower cowl. Just under the throttle and gear cables. There is a known issue with this, on these early models of the 2.1l engine. If that’s what it is. There is also a situation where the throttle assembly mechanism down there needs re...

2018 Mercury 150 EFI hard to start hot

Have you ever removed the cleanable/serviceable fuel filter strainer in the fuel rail ? How’s the throttle position sensor ? You can test this, as per the manual. Could be the coil packs too. They can cause issue with varying heat conditions.

    Long shaft for dinghy

Yeah. It’s not ideal at all really. Very poor running attitude with a long shaft..not to mention usually meaning it throws water at you, over the transom…the cantilever effect under acceleration, has a fair pull on the poor wee transom. Even a short shaft engine usually sits a fair way under the...

    Volvo 2009 8.1GXI Hard Start

Check the voltage when you’re cranking. I’d try and isolate the batteries from each other and just use the cranking battery to see what happens. Then try the other battery too. If one of them or both of them struggle, you might be onto something then. All the above is the case, if you normally...

    Help understanding survey conductivity ratings

Mmm. So true three most likely to my mind are; The boat has been massively miss treated for her very short existence, left open to weather at best…or perhaps even sunk/submerged at worst There is discrepancies and/or sporadic results from the test, perhaps from instrument calibration or even...

Twin Merc V8 and different fuel usage

Hi. It’s a very common trait, with certain twin outboard rigged boats. One engine will always use more than the other. Many boring reasons and hydrodynamic reasons and variables to explain it, perhaps too late and too many beers had, for me to put in writing at this time of night where I am…but...

Star Tron added to Jetski's now they will not start

Exactly this ☝️. Seen it happen countless times. Loosens off decades of dormant crap in the tank…throws it through the fuel system. Empty tank, entirely..clean the check valve, change the fuel filter and absolutely clean the carbs too.

    Mercury 2.2 HP bad coil

Yeah. Could or might not be…but worth a check. All the way end to end of the circuit. It could be the coil…but if it’s not been absolutely diagnosed and tested as such…I’d urge you to look to the simple things first. 99% of the time a old trusty 2 stroke like this doesn’t start…it’s a fuel...
