I was over due for this to happen.

Well, one good thing about climate change is that it almost never rains here in the summer. There is almost no way for rainwater to get into the fuel tank. I never had any significant water from the gas station tanks. Of course, I only use high volume automotive gas stations. Low volume gas...

Chainsaw cutting lube in a pinch

One more observation. I had a control cable from an outboard. The inner wire was solid stainless steel, but it did not move smoothly. I had just changed the oil in my car, so I put the entire cable in the used motor oil to soak. After several hours, I pulled it out and wiped it off. The...

I was over due for this to happen.

What was the gasoline contaminated with? Sounds like water.

    1987 Merc 200 V6 blowing fuse

Power runs from the battery (red wire) thru the fuse to a red/purple wire, which goes to the ign switch. When the ign switch is in the run position, power is supplied to the purple wire. The purple wire will power the gauges, so trace it out. Look for some kind of short circuit on the purple...

    Switch 10x7 4 blade prop to a 3 blade

It is likely you mean the prop ventilates. Ventilation is much more common. It is when the prop is able to suck air. The Anti ventilation plate above the prop is designed to prevent that. Cavitation is when the blades create a vacuum or low pressure area on the prop blades as the blades push...

    Correcting potential bad gear ratio

When your boat was made, the Alpha I Gen I gear ratios were pretty standard for each engine. I had an '88 19' SeaRay Sorrento with a 4.3. I ran a 21P prop, on a lighter, smaller boat than yours. So your 19Pprop likely gave you the proper performance. Provided your tach is accurate, your...

    Mercury outboard flywheel removal.

Gee, is that flywheel rusty enough? I would recommend you hose off the block and spray with corrosion guard stuff. It will protect the wiring as well as the painted and rusty surfaces.

    Gas can & line

You should be able to use the evinrude tank and line, with a Merc engine end fitting.

    Mercury outboard flywheel removal.

The Mercury flywheel puller can be purchased as a combo puller and lifting eye. Very handy when pulling the powerhead. I have never had to use it to pull the flywheel but have used it several times to pull the powerhead of my '93 V6.

Mercury M-800 Thunderbolt Full Throttle Only Now Help

I am not real sure what you are asking. Throttle arms are a bit different over different year motors. Here are likely identifications. They appear to match your picture. The bottom set screw on the throttle arm is idle stop. You set that to get the right idle RPM, usually 850 or so. It is...

    Impeller

Gee, scrub it with a brush or use it more often. Using the boat will tend to keep the gearcase clean.

    Tide Tamer Boat Lifts

I have a single piling 1500# aluminum lift made by Tide Tamer. I have it loaded to capacity, or nearly. The bracket bolted to the piling tends to twist. Also, I needed the have the largest dia piling I could, jetted and pounded to have enough support. Everything else worked OK, but I...

    Starter?

I was working from memory. I had a 1988 4.3LX V6 MerCruiser, which I sold in 2006, so it has been a while. I replaced the starter and slave solenoid on that motor and seem to remember that the power wires plus the orange alternator wires were all on the positive battery post of the starter...

    Manual fuel pump restrictions?

I presume the fuel tank is 2' lower than the engine? That seems unusual. I would expect the tank to be no more than 1 foot lower as most sterndrive boats have the engine sitting on 4-6" stringers molded to the bottom of the hull. Most fuel tanks sit on the base of the hull as well. I would...

    Starter?

Rick, dashboards are normally powered from both the ign key and a direct connection to the battery. The ign key powers the gauges and the direct connection, everything else. Since you are having trouble with your starting circuit, after your dashboard electrical repair I would recommend you...

Testing for DC based ground leaks

DC Ground Leak? We just called it a passive drain or short. I am not sure about new boats, but newer cars often have small current flows when everything is off, especially when the battery is first connected. It would not surprise me if boats start to have those as well.

    86-87 Mariner 150 questions

Change as many parts as you can. I think the carrier was to hard to get out, and didn't look worn, so I left it original. I run a 16 foot (about 1000# with motor and gas) speedboat with that motor. She will swing a 23P prop, but the hole shot is a bit sluggish. She would probably swing a...

    86-87 Mariner 150 questions

That is a lot of pitch for that boat/motor combo. A 21"P prop would probably be max. The poppit controls cooling at high speed. If that is where she is overheating, it is a possible candidate. Make sure you get the exact poppit kit for your year and model motor, as they changed over the years.

    Process for changing boat trailers?

Gee, loosen the winch strap so you have 6" of slack. Tie the transom eyes to a tree and pull the trailer forward a bit pulling the transom back off the trailer until you can add blocks under the transom corners. Now drop the tongue and add the blocks under the transom corners, padded with...
