    Rewiring Quicksilver Controller

Go to the maxrules site and look at the common wiring diagrams. Try to find one that is close, which should be by year. The 3 wire connector on front exterior of the MerControl should be for gauges. It will be ign power, ground and tach signal. See below for wire colors. The flat 4 wire might...

power trim stays on 150 2000 johnson

The relays should be sealed, so I do not think those are the issue. It is therefore time to disconnect the motor mounted PTT switch. If that doesn't fix it, you need to look at the PTT motor wires that run from the PTT motor to the relays, as well as any other wiring. It is a fairly simple...

power trim stays on 150 2000 johnson

Gee, isn't water in a switch a contributing factor?

power trim stays on 150 2000 johnson

Most often water gets into the toggle type switches. This can complete the circuit, running the trim motor, with the switch in the off position. Generally motor mounted PTT switches are fairly water resistant. Are your switches OEM or aftermarket?

    Ethanol free gas for Mercruiser

Some sound advice here. Let me add my .02. For engines that sit like generators, pressure washers, etc. stabilize the fuel, shut off the fuel flow (if you can), and run those single carb motors dry. If no fuel shut off, drain the gasoline, run the motor dry and toss an oz of 2 cycle oil into...

    Manual jack plate starting height

Squirrelly at speed is not a function of the Jack Plate itself. It is a characteristic of the hull, that can occur at high speed. Now if the Jack Plate increases your speed enough to achieve that squirrelly feel... I just found the JP to be more of a PIA than I liked, as trim needed to be exact

    Manual jack plate starting height

I had a JP on my speedboat for some years. The real issue I had was that it made the boat tricky to drive, as the motor needed to be fully down to get on plane. then it had to be trimmed just right. When you did this, you did achieve some extra speed, however, I was the only one who knew how...

Too much wind and rain in my face

Gee, my 21footer DC has two full size windshields plus a hinged portion that fills the void between them. The dual consoles are sufficient to protect from rain and wind. In November, and that makes all the difference. The bow is still open to cast and jig, when you are stopped. If you want...

Is it safe to replace the engine circulator pump in the water?

The circulator pump should be above the waterline on most installations. Pull off the raw water hose and see if it leaks into the boat. If not, you are fine. If she leaks, plug it an then you should be fine.

    OMS help needed

OMS is the proper name for the newer VRO pump. Rebuild kits for the gasoline side are avail at maxrules. A service manual will have tests for the 4 alarms, of which you have 3 (low oil, no oil, overheat). The service manual will also have the specs for the oil output test, which you can run.

    Manual jack plate starting height

That starting point is probably fine. Check to make sure she is pumping water when on plane, but I expect she will be fine. A trick is to close up the top water intake hole and enlarge the bottom one. Just so you are expecting it, as you raise the engine height, the trim loses influence. At...

Too much wind and rain in my face

Very cool on that modification. I always thought that a Dual Console offered the wind/rain protection w/o the screens and $$ you have been asked for. You can still fish off the bow of a DC but need to put your butt in a seat to be comfortable. Just my opinion. Now if you want to go out...

    In-Line Fuel Filter Question

Gee, don't have time to clean tanks and filters? That sounds like crap. They may not want to change filters, but they do have the time to do it. I am not sure what the laws and regulations are about changing filters, but if a gasoline station gets a reputation about bad gas, I would think...

knocking sound in lower section of engine cowl, above lower unit.

That "bushing" looks like a bearing to me, although I have not looked it up on the parts list. You might see if it turns, as it appears to be pretty rusty. Perhaps the driveshaft spins and the bearing doesn't?

    Rebuilt Water Pump Pee question

Mike, when running on the flusher, you will see the water being sucked into the motor. Install the flusher and hose, turn the water on, motor off. Observe the water pouring onto the ground. Start the motor-nearly all the water will be sucked into the motor for at least 30 sec. if that...

    In-Line Fuel Filter Question

Why would a high volume station give bad fuel, when it pumps 10K gal per shift. They would lose business to the local shmo. Do you have any evidence to back up your claim?

Run Merc 3.0LX on external fuel tank

Gee, the fitting looks good. Is there a tube into the fuel tank to suck up the fuel? New tanks have that, used tanks, who knows.

    Engine dies under a load

Gee, sounds like the carbs. Put a flusher on the motor and give it a shot of 50::1 down the carb throats. Crank it up, choke closed and see if she runs a bit. If so, the carbs likely need cleaning.

    Gear Oil In My Bilge

Gear lube in the bilge on a MerCruiser usually comes from a leaking yoke seal on the driveshaft. See if you can detect the gear oil by sticking your finger on the bellows from inside the boat, or pull the outdrive and see if gear oil is in the driveshaft bellows. As for the water, I am not...
