Trim won't go all the way up

To trailer the outdrive, push the middle and up button at the same time. That is how it was originally designed. The fact that the middle button trims the OD means that either the system is wired as it came from the factory and the trim limit switch is working, or someone has modified it, in...

    In-Line Fuel Filter Question

High volume gasoline stations have the least water in their tanks. They have thought of raining when filling. Stick with them for clean fresh fuel. Do install a water separator, however.

    pressure test lower end adapter

The gearcase lube pumps work much better than squeezing the gear lube tubes. The larger gearcases take 25oz of lube, so you often need an extra qt of lube as sometimes the pumps don't like to pump the last of the lube.

    pressure test lower end adapter

Gee, I pull the hose of the gear lube, screw it into the gearcase and stick a hand pump onto the hose.

Run Merc 3.0LX on external fuel tank

You can probably reuse the fuel after filtering it and pouring off any water and water+alcohol, however, you need to at least smell it to determine if it is still good. Bad fuel has a castor oil-sorta smell. That you should use to start campfires, if it still will burn. Worse comes to...

Run Merc 3.0LX on external fuel tank

A single water separator should be more than adequate to filter your fuel. A second one will restrict fuel flow and is unnecessary. Your carb should not get gummed up that often. I rebuilt my MerCruiser carb once in the 10+ years I owned it, and I bought it used. Something is amiss, I would...

Run Merc 3.0LX on external fuel tank

Mike, I think you should connect the aux tank to your water separator. Although ethanol fuel is not the devil alot think, it still benefits from a good filtering before use. Are you going to clean your carb before you try this test? Carbs usually get gummed up if you leave them full of fuel...

    In-Line Fuel Filter Question

The gasoline in the carbs will evaporate when in storage. If the filter is above the carb fuel level, it can drain into the carb, as the gasoline evaporates. So when you ran the 4 carbs dry, some of them still had some fuel, plus any that was still in the filter, lines etc, that could drain...

    Mounting cleats on my dock

Make sure the cleats are solidly attached. Dock boards are normally nailed down. They are not always solidly attached to the joists, and can pull out, especially if the nails rust. Here on the salty bay, I tie the lines to the pilings, as they are much stronger than any cleat on a dock board.

Run Merc 3.0LX on external fuel tank

If he has an electric fuel pump the primer bulb is unnecessary, however, if he has a mechanical fuel pump, a primer bulb will prime the pump and perhaps the carb, allowing the motor to start faster. Since this is for a test, vs conventional use, that could be an advantage.

    Starter?

I was guessing the starter solenoid uses 10 amps. A normal wire size for that much current would be 12 ga. I just didn't want you to use too light of a wire and it get hot and burn your fingers. Sometimes trim tabs do have an automatic raising function when the ign turns off. It is pretty...

Run Merc 3.0LX on external fuel tank

Mike, run the fuel line from the separator to the tank. To be legal, you would need an antisiphon valve on the fuel tank, but those portables usually do not have them. A primer bulb is necessary, BTW. Since this is only a test, I would not sweat the A-S valve. Do remember to plug the fuel...

    Starter?

I do not think the copper strap that powers the starter looks too bad. It isn't shorting to the case, right? Shouldn't there be a ground wire on the starter solenoid in pic 1? Maybe you don't need it, I cannot remember, but thought most had one. Your trim tabs should not move, unless the...

My 1993 V6 specifies BU8H. My inline 6 specified BUHW. They are pretty close in design.

What performance can be expected from this prop change?

I ran a sterndrive boat on a shallow bay. When accelerating the prop would often drag thru the silt and mud. It would rip up an alum prop on every trip, but had no effect on a SS prop. I got many seasons out of the SS prop, w/o damage. if you do not have this issue, an alum prop works just...

    Mercruiser 3.0 181 Aplha One Gen 2

Gee, that is a nylon locknut. It should not need anything to stay tight. Tighten it well and see if it stays tight. If not replace it. I found the pulleys got rusty and the rust chewed up the belts pretty good. I would sand them smooth, prime and paint them and the belts would last.

What is this filter on the ignition power wire?

Years ago, autos would have a Condenser (capacitor) on the ign wire to help control the RF noise that came from the ign system. That device looks to be in the right place, however, it is not a cap, or at least it doesn't look like a cap. Maybe it is a resistor to lower voltage?
