    Older Boats

I beg to differ. If you can find someone to work on an older 2 cycle OB, I would expect the cost of the same repair on a 4 cycle outboard would be more. Also 4 cycle maintenance is more involved and therefore more costly. 2cycle motors are real simple. You plug in fresh fuel and go. Keep...

Gee, how many small engines went to the dump because of a dirty carb? I would bet it was a few....

    Older Boats

Cable and pulley systems are pretty safe for HP less than 50-75HP, if the components are up to it and well secured. It gets iffy with larger motors. It is best to go to a single cable R&P or Rotary system for larger motors. The paradox with boats is that heavy boats perform best in heavy...

Too much wind and rain in my face

My neighbor has a 27' CC. He has snap in clear plastic that connects the T top to the gunwale, on each side. It makes it hard to get to the bow, but really protects the sailors behind the screen.

    88 spl stiff shift rod

Racer, I was concerned about cleaning the corrosion, which is why I replaced the cover. I thought I might make the hole too large. Do you precision drill the cover to restore it or what?

With QuickStart you do not need to advance the throttle when cold starting. The motor should start and run a bit rough until it warms up. Use choke as normal. Then it should run as smooth as normal. Quickstart automatically cuts off if revs go over 1200, so if you use the cold start lever...

    Leak in aluminum boat

There are solid pop rivets in various sizes. Those may seal the leak, after you drill out the old rivets. The other choice (I am not an expert on aluminum) is to buck the rivets to reseal them. Is there any damage on the mating surfaces of the plates, or are the rivets just loose?

    Outboard motor upgrade?

A ponton of that size typically has speeds of about 22mph with a 150HP OB. I would think a 120HP OB would see near that speed, and still be within max HP rating. Hopefully that is enough speed for you.

    Shift Lever Question

I am not sure what motor you have, however, most will trim in forward. It sounds like a bare wire or some other mechanical issue in the shift handle or controller body. Maybe a wire shorts or the ground breaks when in forward, but connects in neutral?

Whoo Hoo! I have a hole in my boat...

Gee, put a few layers of cloth on it, as the prep is already done. Poly resin is fine. When the hull flexes, I will bet she will leak again.

Power trim not working just clicks.

The motor lives in the water. They have a hard life. I have never had a relay or solenoid fail, but have replaced several PTT motors. It is time to pull the PTT motor and see if it will come apart. Not sure what parts are replaceable. Save any seals that come out. My V6 Merc needs to have...

I am not familiar with your exact motor, but, normally you ground the temp sensor on the cylinder head and the alarm should sound, with the ign key on. A lot of motors will limit the speed of the engine, when the alarm sounds. Some motors also have a light on the tacho for overheat. For low...

    88 spl stiff shift rod

On my '98 Johnny, the shift rod had become jammed into the cover that it goes thru. It appeared the aluminum cover had swelled a bit, gripping the shift rod. My cure was to replace the cover. The new cover came with the two oring seals already installed, plus the gasket. Make sure to...

Does anyone remember when car & boat engines only had.

Gee, along with that simplicity of points/coil ignition and carbs came new spark plugs at least twice a year, new points at least 1/year and rebuild carbs every 3 years. Spark plug wires, rotor and cap every couple of years, grease the steering fittings, new antifreeze every 4 years, and other...

Protect the metal from rust as best as you can. In saltwater that galvanizing would last only a few seasons.

    Removing Carpet Glue

Latex glue should clean up with water if wet or maybe mineral spirits if dry. Oil based glue should clean up with mineral spirits if still wet. If dry try acetone.

Power trim not working just clicks.

Just so you know, PTT motors do fail. I have had them corrode thru the body. If you do need to replace it, and it is a 2 wire motor, you should have no issues. However, if you want to replace a 3 wire motor, you either need to find a 3 wire PTT motor replacement, or upgrade the whole system...

Bizarre starter behavior (won't "bench test" on motor)

Can you put a voltmeter on the positive terminal and the case of the starter (shiny metal) and see if you have 12VDC? I cannot think of any other test.

    Trim gauge

I could always hear when the motor was full up or full down. The PTT motor changes tone.
