VP 5.7 Gi-F Riser &Manifold Gaskets / Spark Plug Questions

Learned a few things today! The goal was to install exhaust manifolds, risers, heat exchanges, impeller, tensioner pulley, and thermostat. I finally feltl like a real mechanic since this was the first time using a torque wrench. I was in the minor leagues but it all changed when I got that...

VP 5.7 Gi-F Riser &Manifold Gaskets / Spark Plug Questions

The thin metal one is the Oem volvo ones that just came off the risers. About the thickness if two or three playing cards. The Sierras are much thicker and a compressible material, maybe two or three credit cards in thickness. Still not sure which one is the right one to use.

VP 5.7 Gi-F Riser &Manifold Gaskets / Spark Plug Questions

I'm about to put my new exhaust manifolds and risers on and noticed that the Sierra gaskets for the riser are very different than the OEM Volvos. The Sierras are thick and look like they can deal with imperfections. The OEM Volvos are a thin meta gasket with a small rubber bump separating the...

Volvo Penta 5.7Gi Closed Cooling Question

Lou- These OEM riser gaskets look a lot different than the Sierra ones the shop sold to me. I think the OEM's are the way to go and this is one repair I dont want to use Sierra ones on. Seems like Sierra makes some good aftermarket parts but there risers gaskets are not anything like these.

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

Just tested the thermostat in pot of boiling water. It "looked" new but the results were not what I expected. Its a 158F thermostat. At 168F it started to open a very small amount.....the very first signs of anything at all. At 178F it was about 40% open. At 184F it was at max opening. It did...

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

The spark arrester probably hasn’t been cleaned in 20 years so I’m gonna put it in a bath of barnacle Buster and take a small bristle brush and clean it. It has of a lot of aluminum oxide if that’s what the rust is called. The spark plugs are Champion 1703’s and I’m not even sure they are the...

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

I’m super glad I am checking everything and squaring away as much as possible. On a fuel injected engine, what can cause hey is cylinder to run rich? With the computer scanner, could that kind of information be pulled from the computer?

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

Got some photos of the exhaust ports. I’m hoping these valve stems and valves look normal for their age. The valve stems just have a very light oxidation that is on the surface but no pitting or measure rusting. It appears that the previous manifold gasket was not the right type and allowed...

I completely went down the rabbit hole with my cooling system Volvo Penta 5.7

This all started with the boat running just a little bit on the warm side but nothing unusual. Being a new boat to me, but having two previous owners, I thought I would tiptoe into my investigation by just having a look at the gasket underneath the riser. That led to removing both risers and the...

Volvo Penta 5.7Gi Closed Cooling Question

A quick update and there are more details at the other thread I have going I finally pulled the manifolds and the risers. Was going to use them but then saw to many signs that they are failing. Order two new manifolds and already have two new risers. It just wasn't worth the risk! Also going...

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

I order two new Sierra manifolds today off Amazon at a really great price and free two day shipping. $220 each and local shops were $280 each and have two new risers ready to go when they show up. Heading to the boat tomorrow to get pics of valves and stems in the ports to asses conditions...

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

Thank you for all your input. Upon further reading, I think I’m going to replace the manifolds . I was so focused on the water passageways that I overlooked this item in the throat of the exhaust port. While I believe the water jackets are clear enough to circulate water, it appears to me that...

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

So the acid bath did eat a lot of stuff and I pulled the brass plugs and forced out a lot of gunk in that lower round cylinder chamber. I am now sending the surfaces and one in opinion of just how perfect they need to be since the gaskets are kind of thick and look like compress a little bit. I...

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

OK so just to make sure I have the straight. Put the brass plugs on the bottom of the manifold to seal up any place for the acetone to go. Pour through the water jacket slots on top and fill it to the top then checking to see if anything is running through the exhaust ports?

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

Well the first quote from a machine shop was $150 to throw them on some sort of belt sander. I already have one brand new riser that came with the boat so I could probably buy another brand new one for under 200. If the manifolds look good, would it be foolish to throw new risers on top of used...

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

Well so far this has been not too bad! The product is called rydlyme . I scraped off as much interior stuff as I could and the passageways are really opening up now. The brass plugs on each end were so full of sediment that you could not see through the hole. A bunch of black sludge was in...

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

There was a small seepage rust spot forming at the gasket between the riser and the manifold. When the boat was last in for outdrive service the mechanic said it might be time for riser gaskets. There’s a really cool shop in Oxnard called Base auto and Marine. The guy working at the shop seems...
