    Quit My Job . . .

Quick Update . . . The I.T. front has been more active than the Boat Upholstery front. I got my '2nd in command' at the previous place the IT Director job where I am currently consulting. I am going to be starting a new IT consulting gig at another company that should be keeping me busy for...

    Owners Manual

Boat manuals are usually not a thing until recently. Boats came with very little useful documentation. So, if nothing comes up on a Google search, than what you are looking for may not ever existed. The engine manual(s) may be the most useful.

    99 Monterey 276 Transom Replacement

Also, if you have access to an infrared camera, those are effective in identifying wet/rotted areas within a hull. Another thing that you can do is use a fairly inexpensive probe type moisture meter and just drill slightly through the fiberglass coating rather than deeper into the transom, so...

    99 Monterey 276 Transom Replacement

Probably a 1/4" drill from the inside near the leaking area and a few places higher. Go about 1" deep (the transom is 2" thick). Take pictures and save samples of the shavings, noting if the are wet, dark, mushy, etc.

    1987 Cruisers, inc - Roque 287S

Greetings and welcome to iBoats . . . Owner's Manuals for boat were not really a thing until lately. Mostly stuff about navigation rules. There is a fairly active Owner's group on FB and you could reach out to Cruisers Customer Service for guidance. I do see that there is a 90-page manual...

    99 Monterey 276 Transom Replacement

It could be just an assumption, so it needs to be verified before putting money and effort into it. it might be good to get the boat out of the water and take some core samples of the transom, both near the leak and elsewhere

    A couple basic testing questions

It is hard to compare with the compression tests of others, because the methods of others and their 'pulling strength' varies, as well as the accuracy of the gauges. Therefore, if you are using reasonable methods of static compression testing take the highest value and call it good.

    A couple basic testing questions

what do you get if you spin the flywheel with the drill on high range? You do need a few compression cycles to fully pressurize the test gauge & hose. So, you could go with the 70# number. It is just a matter of consistency.

    2002 Glastron 175sx milky oil

It would be nice to see the oil that you took out of the engine. After you run the boat, it would be good to remove the spark plugs to see if you are getting any water in the cylinders. The battery may be bad, so see about getting a new battery.

    Towing a Chaparral 23 H2o Sport boat with a 4Runner that has a 5,000 pound tow rating

As stated, you will probably be in the 5,500 - 6,000 range for your actual towing weight. I've towed over the weight rating, but don't tell anybody. That tow rating seems pretty low for a 4Runner . . . 7K of towing capability would be better.

    99 Monterey 276 Transom Replacement

Bummer . . . oh and welcome to iBoats. We are here to help. Many of us us fixed transom and structural rot ourselves, because we are not made of $$$$$. Anyway, $20 K is a bit pricey, but figure $2K just to take the engines out and $2K to put them back in. Usually the rot goes further than...

    Four Winns hull strength

As Scott so colorfully indicated . . . boats will typically take a lot more pounding than the people on them. So, you will give up long before the boat does. Since you are talking about a fairly new boat, you also have far less to be concerned about with structural rot issues, which can result...

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

The car has right around 54K miles Many of the fault codes were 6-8K miles ago, but they don't seem to go away with the code clearing function. I think the tech stuff has gotten ahead of the ability to service in some regards, and the results is the 'parts cannon'.
