    Restoration 1984 Scarab I 21.5'

Welcome @DrunkenSailor2020 . . . This is a great restoration thread to see and it looks like you are well on your way. Most of the boats that we see restored here are of the older design, where the cockpit floor is separate from the cap for the boat, and the boat is usually restored with the...

    Another winterize question

Good point about the heat exchanger/closed cooling. Depending on if you have a 'half' system or a 'full' system, here are some diagrams . . . . . Closed cooling is easy, since the flow through the 'open' side is more sequential than a raw water cooled engine, and there tends to be less water...

    Another winterize question

Here are my comments to the #1 method you described . . .

Drive removed for the 1st time, gimbal aligment inspection

I just recall when I first got my boat, the engines were so well aligned that when I took the outdrives off, they slid right out on their own . . . I had to make a diving catch 😲

Drive removed for the 1st time, gimbal aligment inspection

I usually use 'dirty' (gray) grease because it is easier to see the spline marks

    Identification of Boat

Here is some info on HIN's Usually it would be located upper right (starboard) on the transom just below the rubrail. 1972 was the first year for HIN's, so if you can't find one, the boat may be older than 1972. Got any paperwork with the boat?

    1988 Rogue 2420

Wow 😲 . . . seems like if it weren't for bad luck, you wouldn't have any luck at all. Hope it all works out.

What issues would a leaky riser cause?

Looks like you found the problem. I like the plastic bag method, seems like it helped pinpoint the issue.

A couple of different winterizing questions.

    1) The engine will not begin cooling itself until enough water is pumped into the block so that the recirculating pump can start moving water/AF through the block. Typically, this will be about 2-3 gallons of water, which may take about 30 seconds at idle speed. It is doubtful that 30 seconds...

Accidently Sanded Gel Coat to Fiberglass HELP!

Nice going. 🙄 sounds like you are doing something that is difficult to begin with. Maybe sand the paint and then gel coat

    1995 OMC 5.0L Winterizing

@ggundersen3 's concerns are well-founded. The only good news is that the shop (supposedly) used -100˚ F antifreeze. The bad news is that there is no real way of telling that they did enough, unless the remaining AF/water in the block/manifolds are tested. Draining is probably the way to go...

Boat Hard to Start After a Long Sit

Gas might be draining back into the fuel tank . . . there should be a check valve at the tank fuel fitting. Maybe see if that is working properly or gummed up.

    Sea Ray 220 BR Remodel

Yup . . . some sort of adhesive. Hopefully you have taken lots of measurements to refer to when you rebuild the structure.

    Fuel consumption

FWIW - My 454's run through about 1 gallon in 20 minutes. Just did my winterization with 3/4 of a gallon for each engine. So, a gallon should be plenty.

    Sea Ray 220 BR Remodel

Answers . . . 1) Are you sure you will run into 'butter' between the stringers and the hull? Production boats may not really do much to isolate the stringer. I would use a cutting tool to get as close to the hull without cutting into the hull. 2) Grind off any high spots with a 36 grit (or...

Drive removed for the 1st time, gimbal aligment inspection

My point is that turning the tool (while in the coupler as shown on the OP's video) wipes out the spline marks. So, you cannot see if the spline marks within the grease coating are more pronounced on one area of the tool vs. another. Differences in the spline marks are what you go by to make...

Drive removed for the 1st time, gimbal aligment inspection

So why are you turning the alignment tool once you have it inserted into the coupler? You won't be able to see the spline marks which are telltale of the alignment.

High Idle After Overheat - 454 Mag Bravo Gen V

Agree with Lou & AD . . . check the linkage and any signs of the intake leaking air . . . a high idle with the carb at its proper idle setting would indicate an air leak in the intake (somewhere). Run the engine on the muffs and see what it idles at . . . if it is still high after checking...
