    Actually they are 3/8” hex. A short combination wrench either 6 or 12 point was my tool of choice. Sometimes a 3/8” universal socket 1/4” drive with a extension and driver handle after the bolts are loose. And of course, patience.

    I bet that the crankshaft is rotating at the required speed but the signal is coming from camshaft speed since the rpm readout is low. Are the signal pick ups in the same place as the original engine? Of course this is just a guess. Maybe someone can post a wiring diagram of your model.
