    1996 Evinrude 40hp - Will not idle, 6mph WOT

It almost certainly is running on one cylinder. But it is time to verify that (past time, actually). Disconnect and ground one spark plug wire and start and run the motor. Then do the same, disconnecting and grounding the other spark plug lead. If it makes no difference with one grounded...

Checking Pts without Removing Flywheel CD-18

Yep, that's the process. With the flywheel hole over the points, they will be in position to be set to 0.020".

No aluminum model # plug on this powerhead.. Old 2 cylinder. How to identify??

The main concern you should deal with is 18 or 20 hp OR a 25 hp.? 18 and 20 hps are pretty similar but there are significant differences in 25hp. I don't know that I could tell a 25 without tearing it down.

    1964 Johnson 60HP V4 Carb adjustment

Are you trying to perform belt timing? If so, you got it wrong. The magneto pulley mark is supposed align with the center of the safety switch, NOT the mark on the bracket. The mark on the bracket is for battery ignition models (you have magneto ignition.) Flywheel and block marks are...

    1997 50hp Johnson - techron issue?

No offense meant, but this is just a common example of how many people do not know how to start their motor. I've seen brand new motors that wouldn't start because nobody instructed them how to do it. Don't be afraid to use that warm-up lever. That's what it is there for. And no, the primer...

Racer beat me to it. He's correct--as always

    Old Johnson 3hp

I agree, sounds like a dirty orifice plug. It must be absolutely, positively CLEAN without a trace of gum or crud in it. But don't go jamming drills or wires, etc, through it. Oversize orifice (hole) is just as bad as a clogged one. It is a precision item.

Evinrude 40 hp prop shaft bearing housing puller

Shouldn't be too hard to dream up a substitute.

    Evinrude 40 HP WorkTwin Question

I believe you have a motor slightly older than 1984. Why? because it has the beloved Lo-Tension magneto. You need to know this if you are going to order a coil. EDIT: 1983 model E40RWLCTA has the Lo-Tension magneto. Coil for that one is part number 0502881

    Evinrude 40 HP WorkTwin Question

That "CI or CR" or whatever is critical in determining the year. "C" stands for 8, R stands for 4 etc. Code word isd INTRODUCES where I is one, N is two, T is three, and so on.

You can't bore a 30hp to 35hp. But you can put a 35 powerhead on a 30. A picture can tell the truth.

Your picture shows a 1956 30 hp hood. But they can be swapped. Model number is here between stern brackets. If it ain't there, somebody has removed it. If you will back off with that camera to show a shot at the rear, toward the spark plugs, we can tell you for sure 30 or 35 hp

Help identify model and hear number

Yeah, but is This Hogfan's motor? https://web.archive.org/web/20051027043555fw_/http://www.old-omc.de/j_1956/seite_04.jpg

Help identify model and hear number

Hogfan, the "R" indicates it is a replacement powerhead. I'll take a stab at it. Is it red and white with a metal flip-up cowling? If so, it is a 1956 30 hp. Based on the fact that many of those powerheads got replaced under warranty due to water ingestion due to a faulty lower crankshaft seal.

    55 or 56

The seal problem I referred to was the lower crankshaft seal. An engineering screw-up used an inferior seal that allowed water ingestion into the crankcase, rusting all the bearings. Later production numbers fixed the problem.

Original mix was 24:1. Some will argue, but in my opinion, that motor will do just fine on 50:1. Having said that, some 1956 30 hp motors had bearing and seal problems. If it tears up on 50:1, it was going to do that anyway

1966 CD-23B tilt adjusting rod stuck

In all my years here in the land of salt and sea, I can't remember ever seeing one of those tilt adjusting levers being too stuck to move. Let me get this straight...are you saying the motor is now in the tilted-up position and won't go down to the running position? I suspect the cross bolt...

1957 Sea King 5 hp has a couple problems

Yeah, good idle on both cylinders is good. Adjust carb needles on a boat on the lake for best running. As for the slow speed needle, adjust as lean as possible without sneezing or stalling. BTW, make sure coil laminations are not dragging on flywheel magnets.

1957 Sea King 5 hp has a couple problems

    1. The dial plate wording rarely is accurate. Think of it more as fast is thisaway and slow is thataway. Throttle plate should just start to open at mark is correct. 2. some wobble is expected, unless really out of reason. 3. Set points to open 0.020" at widest opening. That is "good...
