I keep saying it---you can't test a water pump on muffs. Get it off those muffs and onto the lake.

What is the function of the orifice plug

You ask what will make it run rich. 1. wrong orifce plug 2. somebody drilled out the orifice plug or jammed wires, or whatever through it. That is a precision hole. 3. thick gasket missing from center of carb bowl. (comes with a kit).

    Timing Retard

The SET mark on the cam is the high point of the cam and the widest opening of the points. It is NOT when the spark is produced. The spark happens somewhat before that, at the instant the points break contact. Since the spark occurs at approx. TDC, of course the piston will be on the...

    Timing Retard

I can't quite follow your problem/description. Why are you messing with TDC, and all that stuff? Position the points' rubbing block on the SET mark on the cam and adjust the gap to 0.020". Do same with the other set of points. If this is mis-understanding your situation, try posting some...

    1954 10HP Johnson crank question

302035 (0302035) is the correct part number for that o-ring. The same o-ring is used on the impeller housing spacer on various motors, explaining the description. Bottom line is, the e-bay seller sent you the wrong o-ring, improperly labeled 302035.

What percentage of value of motor do you replace? How much to spend on parts motor?

Parts motors often have the same problem as the one you already have. I would only buy one if I have a specific need for a part. The exception would be for a motor within my special collection interest, with the idea of making one good motor out of two (or three....or four)

    1969 25 Hp Johnny Rude/Kicker?

Very common problem here in salt water land. Remove the big gear, then drive out the plastic bushing. Clean the corrosion out of the hole that the bushing came out of. Grease everything upon reassembly.

    1969 25 Hp Johnny Rude/Kicker?

Unless you get a motor big enough to plane the boat, you won't get much more speed from going larger than 4 or 5 hp. I say keep the weight down with a 3 or 4hp. Myself, I use a 3hp Gale. (My collection specialty).

I am concerned about the repeated quitting and smoking in that weedy waterway.

    oil seal leak?

Don't jump to conclusions. Mess like that is normal when running out of water which I assume you are doing. I doubt you would be able to detect a lower seal leak

    Evinrude 1968 waterpump etc.

The 18 hp motors were made for many years, with many minor changes along the way. Not only that, but if I am not mistaken, the 15 you have is a reincarnation of the Gale 15hp, last made in 1963. Bottom line is that comparing parts with older/newer motors, has to be done on a part-by-part...

    Low power question

Post #2 was a serious suggestion. An all-too common problem with those motors. Exhaust plate warps and water squirts in through the exhaust ports. Result is complete destruction of the powerhead.
