    Mercruiser 470 Alternator conversion

I took my stator out and sold it on ebay. Put the money into the conversion. Left the magnets in place on the damper, wasn't going to go looking for trouble there. For the cam shaft seals issue... you can use a skinny wire up the weep hole to make sure it's not blocked. See attached photo of the...

nice explanation there. I agree check to see if you have to old style shift shaft bushing/seal. If so, upgrade it to the new style.

Mercruiser 165 in over my head, help.

Welcome. Your engine went by different names over the years, with some things changing. I have the same engine but labeled 3.7LX and was the last year they were made in '89. The most common model would be the 470. It is a Mercruiser designed aluminum block designed around The Ford 460 head and...

    Carb or worse?

That's what I'm thinking also.. or maybe a bent pushrod, not allowing the valve to open to build compression? You could probably tell by pulling the valve cover off and looking at the valve spring/rockers. If the valve spring is compressed and the rocker is loose...

Losing Power - After two hours

I would try the burn test, a tea or table spoon in a metal bowl, or if you don't have one, maybe cut the bottom of a soda can open to burn it in. If you can light it, it wouldn't worry me as much. If you can't light it, it would be in your best interest to get it out and start fresh. It's only...

Losing Power - After two hours

I agree. Good ol ethanol strikes again. Take a bit of that cloudy gas out of the cup and put a tablespoon or so on something that can take fire, and try to light it with a grill lighter, I bet you can't.

    76 Mercruiser 165 refresh recommendations

I'd also syphon some fuel out of the tank and inspect it before trying to fire it up. 5+ year old gas is going to have a tough time burning, and I personally wouldn't top off the tank with good stuff to make up for what's in the tank unless the old stuff smells like gas.

Losing Power - After two hours

2- The anti siphon valve is part of the fuel line leaving the tank. 3- The fuel tank vent could be blocked and could cause an issue. As your engine consumes fuel, the tank empties. Air enters the tank via the vent. When your at the pump filling the tank, the air in the tank has to exit to allow...

Mercruiser 5.0 carburetion problem ...should I drain my fuel tank?

Here's a pic I took of old left over gas from previous season in my boat's tank, and new fresh gas on the right. It's worth checking what yours looks like...

    3.7lx merccruiser starter issues.

As a test, you may be able to connect a jumper cable from the POS on the batt to the large lug on the starter that the battery connects to....and also the NEG to the starter body, and see if it cranks over any faster. Be careful that that red cable doesn't touch the motor or starter body at all...

Welcome Aboard! Are you running gas that has been sitting for 3-4 years?

    Priming my 3.0 liter

My guess is the welch plug in your carb is leaking slowly down the intake and the bowl empties after sitting a while. Then it's tough to start because you have to refill the bowl by cranking the engine. There's a fix to repair a leaking welch plug if that's your case. The good part is you won't...
