Performance differences between older and newer Force 4 cylinder lower units

Just an FYI.....I've experimented over the years with different lower units on my 1988 Force 125HP motor. Switching from the earlier 1.73 :1 ratio 4 cylinder lower to a 2:1 ratio 3 cylinder 85HP lower really woke the motor up. Had to switch props though. Had to go to a higher pitch prop...

1990 Force 90 Ignition Not Firing On All Cylinders

Just want to confirm that you have the Prestolite Ignition system with 2 Sky Blue CD Modules and 3 Sky Blue coils. The flywheel should have a single strip stator magnet that runs the entire inner circumference of the flywheel like pictured below.

    carburator

If you are referring to the hole in the picture below (red arrow), either the float level is set too high, or the needle valve is not sealing properly due too debris or bad needle valve. It's not uncommon for fuel to leak out if the motor is tilted way up, but definitely not supposed to happen...

    no spark

Good job...you did all the work! If your flywheel doesn't have the 3/4 inch high internally threaded lip around the center bolt hole, it is 90 FT LBS. If it does have the lip, then it's 125 FT LBS. I'm pretty sure yours is 90 FT LBS. Most of the 3 and 4 cylinder Switch Box motors are 90 FT LBS...

    SportJet 90 PWC transplant

Basically they took a complete Force outboard and split the lower unit away from the power head, So the water line and exhaust run between the two via hoses. Here is a picture of the power head in the engine compartment. Here is the lower unit. Note the exhaust hose hanging loose and...

    drive shaft seal "topic disapeared"

Can't say 100% for sure but it may be the drive shaft seal that goes right under the water pump where the drive shaft comes through the top of gear housing. It prevents water from entering the top of the gear housing and getting on the upper drive shaft bearing. Having said that, a lot of the...

1995 force overheating still and other problems

Thanks for the clarification on your test for the water flow. Well from your test, then I would suspect that you don't have enough water pressure to get the water to come out of the pee hole. Normally the pee hole supply tube is attached to a fitting just behind the thermostat, however, I did...

    1991 force 150 flooding bad

The battery converter box and the Rectifier/Regulator are two separate components. Below is a picture of the battery converter box. I would be hesitant to throw any money at it right now. Double check and make sure your battery connections are all good and clean. Don't just do a visual...

1995 Force 120 Hp OB idle issue

Yes, just short the terminal with the small Yellow wire to the Red wire that comes from the battery. Forgot to mention.....make sure the ignition key in in the ON normal running position. You can use a remote starter switch like this and attach it to the terminals. Makes it a little more...

Finally pulled my head..top cylinder ate a ring

If the motor doesn't actually start, it's normal for the gear on the starter to stay engaged with the flywheel. Once the motor starts, it'll release the gear and it will return to it's normal "down" position. My Clymer manual shows that the Neutral interlock switch on the Commander 3000 control...

1987 85 HP Force motor not charging

You need a "puller". This is the type that I use. It uses the three bolt holes around the center. Tighten up the 3 bolts, crank down on the center shaft or bolt as hard as you can, then strike the head of the center bolt or shaft with a hammer like you're trying to drive it downwards...

tilt & trim leak, can I still go boating?

Yes you can go boating. Like SkiDad stated, you won't be able to trim the motor for optimal performance. Just have to be careful when you're putting the boat into the water. If the motor is all the way down, it's not uncommon for the skeg or a propeller blade to catch on the concrete ramp as...

1991 Force 120 thermostat location and temperature gauge connection sight?

Here's a picture of my sending unit for my temperature gauge installed where the brass or sometimes nylon plug mentioned by SkiDad is usually located on the 4 cylinder Force motors. The red wire goes to the sending unit. When selecting a temp. gauge, be aware these motors run much cooler...

    water intrusion?

You can check the stator winding that charges the battery just like the windings for the ignition. It should read .6 Ohms. Almost a short so you have to have a meter that reads low Ohms. I haven't seen many battery windings go bad. Usually it's the regulator/rectifier. Here's what the...

    87 Force 125 Carb Squirting Fuel/Missing Plug

FYI Pxsp, I was cleaning out my workshop and I found an old parts carburetor with a casting date of 1989. It looks to be the same as yours. I looked at the hole that you thought might be missing a plug. The carburetor that I have does not have a plug either. Upon further investigation, that...

    Splines on Force outboard?

Before 1995 the 4 cylinder Force motors usually had 15 splines. Starting around 1995, they started using crankshafts that had 13 splines on some of the 4 cylinder Force motors, but the crankshaft snout where the flywheel sits is the same diameter as the older Force motors. Somewhere around 1996...

    Primer Bulb

According to my manuals, the 1993 150HP motor uses a "fuel enrichener valve" as a choke. If this is what you have instead of the older style mechanical choke that actives a separate choke plate in the carbs, you might want to verify that the enrichener valve is operating correctly. You can...

    Engine puller loop

Here's one that I made to remove a Force 150HP motor that threads onto the crankshaft. You have to remove the nut that holds the flywheel on and torque this on in it's place.

Measuring stator voltage at high speed

This should help. Note: The comment under "To Multimeter". It says to set the scale to DC volts. This was confusing to me at first because the stator output is actually AC voltage but with the DVA you use the DC volt scale.
