2002 5,7 Mercruiser exhaust manifold keeps cracking - 5 times this summer

I'm in England, recently changed the manifolds on my Volvo/OMC Cobra/Ford302 engine. At the time I bought them the marina only had the slightly more expensive Barr manifolds in stock but the marina said they were a better quality / premium brand, I decided I'd buy the Barr brand anyway.

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Thanks Lou, I opened the links... Copied and pasted... § 183.568 Anti-siphon protection. Each fuel line from the fuel tank to the fuel inlet connection on the carburetor must: (a) Be above the level of the tank top; or (b) Have an anti-siphon device or an electrically operated fuel stop...

Not sure about canal speed limits but would guess speed limit on a canal is around 7mph. The only time I've been on a canal boat was as a 6 year old on a school trip. Not sure which murder mystery films / series you mean. I've been using the boat on the river Ouse which runs through York...

I removed my aluminium valve the other day, it definitely works as a none return valve to prevent fuel flowing backwards from the filter to the tank but I don't think it would prevent fuel syphoning out of the tank into the bilge in case the rubber hose broke off from the fuel filter. It's not...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Had to do 'real' work today but finished early enough to visit my boat on the river to try to fix the fuelling problem. I took a 5 gallon jerrycan with intention of rigging a pipe to allow running directly from it to see if there was still fuel starvation. Immediately set about removing the...

2002 5,7 Mercruiser exhaust manifold keeps cracking - 5 times this summer

Old Manifold That looks very thin for cast iron to me but I don't know how thin they usually are. Maybe small internal changes to a manifold design / casting could cause some designs to crack in a particular area? Still can't see how any engine issue could cause manifolds to repeatedly crack...

I looked on a UK marina's website for the fuel filter but there are a few that look the same https://repowermarine.com/buy-volvo-penta-marine-parts/volvo-penta-genuine-engine-parts/volvo-penta-fuel-filters.html . This is the place I bought my Barr exhaust manifolds from and I think they'll know...

Thanks for all the tips. I believe there's also a fine mesh in the fuel entry point on the carb but this should be clear as the fuel will already have been through the fuel filter? I left the boat on the river, expect to use it again with family over the weekend but before then I should go...

The Mustang I pictured is a modified early 2000's 4.6, I like it a lot though. Been on the boat again twice this week so far... I previously mentioned the engine temperature swings, same again this week but not getting too hot now. Started out at light throttle with the temp fairly constant...

Been on the boat on the little river again today, just by myself. Asked my missus, son, daughter, sister, friends, and a customer (whose car I still had in the yard) if they'd like to come for a ride on the boat but they were all either busy or didn't want to, I wanted to so went myself and had...

2002 5,7 Mercruiser exhaust manifold keeps cracking - 5 times this summer

Plenty people are more experienced with boats and marine exhaust manifolds than me but I do know a lot about fuelling/mixture. The amount of fuel an injector will flow for a given pulse length is related to the square root of fuel pressure minus manifold pressure, so the actual effect of none...

2002 5,7 Mercruiser exhaust manifold keeps cracking - 5 times this summer

Nothing wrong with the injectors then. Tbh even if there were a problem with injectors or wiring I don't think it would lead to a cracked manifold. There should be enough water flow through the manifold to prevent hot spots from a lean mixture, if mixture was so lean might expect a burned...

2002 5,7 Mercruiser exhaust manifold keeps cracking - 5 times this summer

Do you know for sure the manifolds are cracked or do you assume they're cracked because water gets into engine cylinders? I can't see how anything besides sudden heating / cooling (lack of or inconsistent cooling water flow), manifold torqued onto a cylinder head that has exhaust ports not flat...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

I'd need to recheck but I seem to remember most wires being similar gauge except the red/yellow main feed to the helm being thicker. I wouldn't expect a 1.5V drop on the red/yellow over the fairly short distance from the engine to the helm. I agree the problem could be dirty/oxidised connections...

Thanks Lou, I'll re-read your posts about winterising again when the time comes, hopefully get a bit more boating done before then. Still haven't used the boat since before my last post, planned on using it on the sea just before then but the weather forecast was bad. Still haven't checked...
