    What oil to use??

You bought Oil that had "Optimax" on the Label? Was the Bottle Sealed? Where did you buy it? Check with the Dealer as to what Colour the Optimax Oil is. Yea a lot of 2 stroke Oils are dyed Blue to help verify that Oil is mixed in the Gas, but with DI Engines(Optimax is one) there is no need to...

Does this seem right to you?

It is badly Worn/Damaged. It is not difficult to replace, just make sure to get one that matchs the type of Brakes the Trailer has, Disk vs. Drum.

1983 Merc 50hp is chugging after a minute of running.

There are 2 carbs on that engine, each feeding 2 Cylinders. If one isn't feeding gas, the engine will slow down and won't be running smooth, but that would actually be a very Minor Concern. The Oil needed to Lube Engine is mixed with the Gas, so no Fuel means no Oil... What do the Plugs look...

    Unknown year

That colour of Decal was first used in 1986, and ran for a few yrs. There should be a metal Disk on the Powerhead, looks a bit like a Frost Plug. It should have the Serial # on it too.

    90HP Mercury pushing 24' pontoon

Let me rephrase that. Change 'Oil Company Executives' to 'Petroleum Robber Barons' I love a Healthy Percentage of Socialism. Many things, like Energy, Communications, Healthcare are far too Important to be left in the hands of Capitalists. I would like a to see a 50-50 split, that way each side...

    New prop for my boat

So what it the WOT Rpm Range for your motor? 5000-5500, 4500-5500? Try the 12, will bring the Rpms down, if it doesn't an you are still hitting 5800, you have to add more Pitch. As for the 3000lb vs, your 2300lb. I will assume the 3000lb was referring to non-pontoon boats. What works on...

    Fuel tank capacity

He could pump tank empty(might remove any water as well) while on the trailer, then head to the Gasoline Robber Baron Station. Beats running out of Fuel on the water.

    Merc 650 prop shaft seals

1971 was the last year for the 4 cylinder 65hp. It shares the Gearcase used by the 4 Cylinder 80 and 85hp, and used the same Gear Ratio of 2.3:1. A Case for the Inline 6s would fit, but they usually had a 2:1 ratio, though some were 1.78:1(1972 115)

Johnson Outboard 9.5 1973 9R73B can hardly pull start with spark plugs in but with plugs removed pulls very easy

Flywheel. I doubt that it is snagging on a Coil, as you are able to rotate the Engine with the Plugs out. No need to drop the Gearcase to check for water, just loosen the Drain Screw, and if water comes out, or the Oil looks like Irish Creme, further testing/inspection required

Fastwin 18 - Help IDing Part

Yes, that is the Idle Speed Adjustment Screw. Turning it In or Out determines how far you retard the Spark Timing, which is what determines the Idle Speed. The Carb is to remain Fully Closed. Adjust it until you get an Idle Speed you are happy with. My Dad and uncle were fans of backing the...

1997 Mercury 9.9 Vent screw turning on air

That's one way to do it. I was thinking along the lines of using one of the Epoxy Putties, to fabricate an extension of the screw, to be gripped. I ran the Serial #, there are 2 main variations of the Gearcase, but neither use the 2 Vent Screws, I had earlier made reference to. I will send the...
