    Have you checked that the wires have continuity. A wire that is broken inside the Insulation can be a Bear to find. Ones that are Susceptible, are the ones that go to the Armature Plate, as they are flexed as the Throttle advances/retards the Timing

    I had a TOP, but I would rather have had a V6. In 1975 when the V6s were first introduced as Production Motors, the Merc certainly put the OMC to shame, even if it was rated 25 less HP. It however was a totally new Engine, unlike the OMCs, which were just 2 more Cylinders stacked on top of the V4

    What condition is the Pump Housing, and Bottom Plate in? If these are worn, in certain areas, all the new Impellers in the world will not get them pump water very well

    I suspect the newer design offers better Cooling, which allows higher compression and/or more spark advance without detonation. and since the entire cover has to come off to access the Thermostat, it is more likely that the water passages will get a Cleaning
