9.8 hp Tohatsu smokes on startup

If a two stroke it is normal as left over fuel residue inside the cylinders evaporates leaving just the two stroke oil. First start burns up all that extra oil resudue. If a four stroke engine then some compression testing should be done to check the motors health

    Question on bimini top location

No matter where the bimini is placed, it will never be in a perfect place !! There is always a differentbspot where it could work better under some circumstances. Make your bimini on a sliding rail sobit can easily be slid back and forth, front to back to create that perfect position !! For...

    Are Mercury 2cyl 2 strokes rubbish vs 3cyl 2strokes? (2008 40hp, boat package deal)

I have the 4 cyl 2 stroke 40 hp Merc...awesome motor, great power, will outrun most other 40 hp motors on similiar boats. Idles so slow you can almost hear each cylinder fire. And easy on fuel compared to my other 2 cyl 40 hp motors..

2020 3.5 HP merc only runs at half choke.

Moisture in the fuel, mabey some crud...probably a gummed up carb from sitting. Previous owner did not run out or drain carb before storage. Clean tank and fuel system thoroughly, probably gummed up.

    Seat Cover Ideas?

Years back a friend of mine made upholstry for old car rebuilders as his hobby. He made a set of seat cushions for a guys boat, similiar to those posted on here, he added a flap about 3" along the long side with snaps to snap the covers onto those tank seats. Easy to make and easy on the butt...

Rapid trailer jerk at higher speeds

Just saw this thread, seems I had a very similiar issue a few years back. Mine was with a Chevy Blazer but my car guy told me it is not uncommon to have older vehicles shake and sway due to wornout suspension systems. My blazer towed without issues until one summer I could not stop the sway...

What are the odds? Two bad batteries in a row?

When ever I buy a new battery I check it with a digital meter, must be at least 12.6 volts, anything less and I will pass on it. I have saw multiple new batteries that go bad, not common but not unusual either. With that said, I would have your boat and charging system tested, a possible short...

Advice on transom leak, 1974 starcraft

First off, all that crud needs cleaned out to allow a seal. I would try tightening the rivets, easy to do know that the hull is open. The inside also needs a thorough cleaning to make any sealer stick. Most folks use gluvit on the inside and it is great stuff. I have come across a sealing...

12’ Livingston seeping water through sidewall

Fiberglass itself is not water proof, it will absorb water over time, so a gelcoat is added on top to seal and make the glass mat waterproof. Paint of good quality will probably seal for a short oeriod of time but us not a permanent solution !!! Others may chime in here with more experience in...
