    79 Johnson tilt and trim

A lot of Problems with the Tilt and Trim of that design, is from Operators not retracting the Trim Rams in all the way when securing the engine for towing, once the Tilt Lock is engaged

    Want to add additional rollers

You could spread the Rollers a bit further apart, to lower it a bit, the Crossmember(s) will rotate to redistribute the load. Roller Trailers do tend to put the Boat higher. Switching to Bunks... You need deeper water to Launch/Load with bunks. Your trailer already has 2 more Rollers than...

    Want to add additional rollers

Not easy to add rollers on a Calkins. Same as my first Boat. I tested it with a 90 merc, and bought it with a 140 Evinrude. It too was on a Calkins, but the older style. FYI the Boat is a Flip of the Crestliner Cruisader 550

    Volvo 3.0 GSP-C carb jets

Your carb is a 500cfm model In my VP Service manual I did find one 500cfm Holley 2300 that used two different Main jets(all the other carbs used the same jetting on both sides) but it only lists the VP Part# Volvo Penta #3863240 500 CFM Model 2300-2V Pump Lever Clearance. . . . . . . . . . ...

    79 Johnson tilt and trim

If the motor is turning, and is turning the Pump, the problem is in the Hydraulics. I suggest a Factory Service Manual for that particular motor

    Piston sleeve hairline cracks

    No, the 1980 uses a 3.5 inch bore, and all the 85 from 1968 thru 1978 have a 3 3/8 inch bore

Can I use a Johnson/Evinrude tank on Merc outboard?

Expect to see the Motor run smoother and more Torquey at low speed, but lose some top speed😉

    How to test for spark?

Sure. As for using a Plug. A Spark jumping a 0.030" gap at Atmospheric Pressure means Nothing. Voltage Requirements go up many-fold when the Cylinder Pressure rises(Denser Air makes a better Insulator). That is the reason for Large Gap for testing

    Prop advice needed

A 3 blade 15 should bring it up to 4800. If you want to really kill your speed, a 4 blade is the way to go. And you will need to go even lower in pitch. As for Lower Planing Speeds, a Prop doesn't change the Planing speed of a Boat, that is determined by the Hull. The Bow can be forced down with...

Lot more new boaters and large wakes?

You are a Rarity then. Where I boat, the LL are on plane running Parallel to the Dock(s), sending boats bouncing and Slamming in to the Docks. Speed Limits, 12km/hr in one Bay, with 3 limited Entrances/Exits are completely ignored by them. I have pictures of the Wildlife Officers hauling one...
