Not a "stupid" question but "loaded" question. lol

    Famous shift shaft

Most if not all Mercs. had some type of "guide" to keep the upper shift-shaft in place for that purpose (they tend to fall out, once the LU has been removed)
  4. The Force power

    Famous shift shaft

I'm not sure what pictures you're talking about. This the procedure; Turn the LU shift shaft by hand counter-clockwise until it stops, then with Vise Grips tight on the bottom of the shaft turn it a few more degrees CCW until it clicks into a stop, this should be neutral - check by turning...

Force 85 really difficult to start

We actually have one in our shop (at work) that's why I recognize the cards. It got used on the Diesel engines (never actually used it myself) I'm not sure how old?? maybe '70s (the pic is from Flea bay)

    early 70s Mercury 500 50hp ignition question

In the pictures provided; yours is pre '73 after that it went to individual coils & and a different switch-box (still belt driven) In '75 or '76 it went to a Stator & Trigger assembly under the Flywheel They were good solid motors accept setting the max spark-advance etc. is a hassle. (don't...

7 Bar = 101.5 PSI The compression reading is not "great" and judging by the compression-tester having (still) a card read-out means it's most likely accurate; the good part is that all readings are close together.

The trim bolts are just finger tight and will replace them one at a time when the new ones get here. Your are replacing the bolts? they don't look that bad? A quick clean on the wire-wheel and a dab of anti-seize on the treads would suffice no?? I mean...the torque value is very low

    Famous shift shaft

Was this together before? or are you matching this up now? Some years/HP have different adapter-shapes to connect to the shift-shaft. (square & spline shapes) Are the both the same?

I apologies for my wrong advice, Jerry is right. That "filter" is actually an Air intake box silencer, it is normal for some gas to come out when choke is closed. If there's a lot of fuel spitting out at all times, then likely the reeds behind the Carbs. will need to be inspected.

Correcting my earlier post (I don't know what I was thinking)😴🤔 I guess I was not! Thank you Jerry for the correction

Static Timing is done in full throttle mode with @ Cranking-speed (spark plugs in + you'll have to bypass the neutral-switch or jump the starter-solenoid) should be at 28 degrees ( to the right of center line)
  18. The Force power

    Famous shift shaft

Good point!! it will causes burrs in the shaft & damage a new shaft-seal when installed with shaft in place
