2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

Just reread my posts --- surprised I couldn't edit a post after 1 hour, might be something new, thought I used to be able to ---- sorry for the rant in the second one. But in the one I offered actual advise. I was wrong on the KS needing 15 ft.lb. oops should be 14 ft.lb. probably doesn't matter...

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

Talking to techs that are still in the business, they tell me it's still getting worse. Most of the techs I worked with got into being a mechanic because they had good aptitude at taking things apart and putting them back together or were like me --- wanted to have a car but couldn't afford to...

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

Unfortunately the engine serial number doesn't work like a VIN does. Your boats HIN -- hull identification number -- kind of does, but doesn't include any engine or drive info like a VIN does. The partial serial number you supplied does tell us that you have an "early" -J model. The serial break...

    ECU pinout/wiring diagrams ???

Yes can get very complex. Sometimes the only way is to talk to Volvo tech support. I do know that just because 2 ECMs look the same doesn’t mean they will have the same pin outs. I have had brand new engines that exhibited this same symptom. I found that 2 of the pins in the ECM plug were...

    ECU pinout/wiring diagrams ???

Sure, just go to. https://www.volvopenta.com/your-engine/manuals-and-handbooks/ And input the serial number. This information is usually found in the diagnostic manual, and/or the wiring diagram manual.

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

At this point, no. I haven’t seen anything that would lead me there. But we don’t know exactly what engine you have. Also haven’t seen enough data on the TCP/TPS to say good or bad. What we have seen looks good. This thread has brought up a point that I wish more people were aware of. To bad...

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

That's EFI Repair not Diagnostics and while it's a good manual to read because it covers a lot of basics that you need to know. You will need 7749393 because that covers the actual diagnostics. Also you might want to contact Rinda because 7743614 has been updated to; VPA 7743614 English 03-2016...

    Engine problems while on vacation

Sorry I missed this but I've been busy. SPN 924 FMI 5 is a check engine light problem. Does the red light on the engine status panel (it's a ! inside of triangle that's inside a circle) light up when you first turn the key to run? SPN 4238 is missing the FMI (can be a 0 or1) (you might need to...

Ya I would hold off on that for a few reasons.

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

You can download a free copy from Volvo https://www.volvopenta.com/en-us/service-and-support/your-engine/manuals-and-handbooks/ I'm curious what the part number and publication date the diagnostic manual is. The copy I have is VPA 7749393 English 2010-12 and I think it might have been the first...

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

Missed that your going to replace the KS? Have you done all the troubleshooting tests? Replacing the KS is last in the diag tree.

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

The variance between the two can have many many reasons. Speed based/Lever based, engine load, boats speed, etc.. I haven't seen anything that would make me question TCP/TPS. What did you find that led you to want to replace the TCP or TPS? Did you run the diagnostic program in Diacom? If I...

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

The engine plate is typically located on the port side of the engine flywheel housing, slightly below and aft of the exhaust manifold. This is copy and paste from your owners manual. I always recommend reading the owners manual. @apisk do you have a copy of the EGC Diagnostics Workshop Manual...

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

Those number look OK to me. This engine is "Speed Based Throttle System" vs "Lever Based Throttle System" as near as I can tell, serial number might tell more. I think Mercury has also used both of these depending on model. The only real difference (other then strategy and parameters that are...

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

A couple of things. Didn't see the serial number. This is a "J" model and there was a serial number break during this model, might be important. @apisk do you have a copy of the EGC Diagnostics Workshop Manual? Had a chance to look at the most recent Diacom file. All the recent codes...

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

don't have much time to look at this right now but I can add this. 5V Ref #2 is a low current regulator that only feeds TCP2. When the TCP is plugged in, 5V Ref #2 will be pulled down to approximately 4.1 – 4.2 volts. This is normal and no attempt should be made to repair this. I'll try to...

    Volvo Penta 5.7 no spark

Alert ---- I was wrong. This is a IAC engine. This engine uses a Lever Based Throttle System. Basically what this means, If you set the throttle lever to half way (50%) this will command the ECM to try to maintain a certain RPM (lets say 2600 rpm as a guess for this engine) so the ECM will try...

Seeking your knowledge on SX-M maint.

First thing that jumps out to me. An SX-M shouldn’t have ANY play at the prop. No side to side, no in or out and should have a little resistance to spinning. Might want to start with why there is play, also might be a good idea to measure how far each prop blade is from the anti-ventilation plate.
