Mercury 75hp on aluminum 16’ Starcraft

Nobody (as I could tell) mentioned trim tabs. Your comment about people sitting in stern seats....aka adjacent to the engine just magnifies your stern heavy condition. Next the load you are wanting to carry in that boat is a lot......a lot more than I would expect to have in that boat. Next...

    Birds in the boat . . .

Looks like a Wren. I had one (apparently) that decided to make a seasonal home in my shop. Been about 5 years now. A very busy bird when she has babies in the nest. She has a beautiful voice. This years 3 hatchlings have just left the area on their own. Spiders have all but...

Mercury 2.5HP Outboard Not Moving Boat?

Is water moving out from behind the engine when you apply throttle? No, then prop isn't being driven as suggested above or engine isn't shifting into F gear like you are telling it. Yes, 15" lower unit on a 20" transom would be a problem. Need new water in front of the prop to get propulsion...

Back for More! Looking into a bigger boat for big water - Deck or other

My family grew up with larger boats too. Got to the point where it was too large on land and too small on the water. Finally quit searching for the ultimate solution to both conditions.

    Engine height

Well sir, that depends on the boat and what's in it. I had an 18' alum. bass boat with a 90 Merc. and SS Ballistic 24P prop., 1 hole up off the transom. The picture in my Avatar is that boat kissing 50 with just me. My fastest hole shot was with the engine at 90* to the hull. Hole shot was...

    More Speed - for fun.

With all that said, correct trim position IS definitely a BIG part of how a prop (any prop) performs on your boat!!!!! There is a correct position for your hole shot with your water toys, and a totally different position for you wanting to get max speed out of your rig......regardless of the...

    Play on propeller shaft

The F gear in the lower unit has an "overrun clutch" built in whereby in F gear, the engine can turn slower than normal vs the prop rotation for times when you throttle down the engine and you are up to speed. Without it, you chop the RPMs, the prop follows the engine and you have this "brake"...

The one in the Avatar? If it had wings it would be totally airborne as it is....grin.

    Mercury 90HP 4 Stroke 2003 Impeller Change

If 4's are like 2's the drive shaft comes up out of the LU and is oiled by the oil in the LU. On the bottom of the water pump lower casting is a pair (usually) of seals facing each other...one keeps the lower unit oil in the lower unit and the other keeps ambient water out of the LU oil. The...

1980s Mercury 2 stroke 35 hp thermostat / not peeing

    1. Following the tube from the outlet to its source, what is it connected to? 2. If the empty housing you say you found may be where a stat is mounted on some engines of that class, take the cover off and crank the engine with the lower unit in water about 6 inches above the AV plate for a...

    83' 115hp Mercury, prop slip

I did replace that water jacket cover gasket later on...never knew why......didn't have a thermostat as I recall and no instruments to indicate crankcase water temp.......but I had a helluva lotta fun!!!!!!

    17 vs 19 vs 21 Pitch?

"And electric car power consumption.-----" Interesting nobody ever mentions what it took to get the battery charged, or built and its weight!

    2001 9.9 2-stroke - water in gear oil

Well I suggested that......got no reply!!!!!!!! Last time I was buying some, they were blue, OEM, and were said to be better quality than original OEM seals. Never had one leak, just changed them anytime I drained the crankcase and refilled with new oil.

    1979 Mercury 80 HP

I have a pedigree in modifying tools to get the job done...grinding off outer diameters of boxed end wrenches, taking an Acetylene torch and getting the handle on a wrench cherry red, with part of it in a bench vise and a pair of pliers or hammer to "tweak the necessary change in shape" is just...

    2001 9.9 2-stroke - water in gear oil

I agree on the pressure test and a tub of water. I am the sort of person that doesn't fix it it it isn't broken (known to be broken...obviously broken). Going through the cost and trouble of ripping everything apart and hoping you get it all back together just to be doing it....probably...

    2001 9.9 2-stroke - water in gear oil

What's the condition of your drain and vent screw gaskets. That's the easiest to fix and easiest to see in your pressurization and submerge testing. On Chris' comments, you don't need to remove the rear bearing carrier nut to address either of those comments. Other thing is the other place...

Can I put a 28 hp Johnson on my 14' Aluminum Sea King?

"Also, does it make a difference that I'll be sitting up front and not at the back as would be the case with a tiller setup?" Of course. Thousands of posts and conversations about tiller driven boats where the owner asks about the load in the aft section only to get replies of "move xxxx...
