Have 14x19 4 blade on 4.3 GXi. Upgrade to Stainless Steel worthwhile?

If it’s pulling people up behind the boat. The high 5 mercury prop is the best of them all, by a long way. Designed specifically for it. I would never normally suggest anything but a 3 blade, but the exception to that is if you are specifically prioritising the main need for doing what you want...

Sport Jet 175 x2 with low compression

Ok. Understand. Will it not even start with some throttle on ? I’d definitely check the pump isn’t getting locked up on something like the wear ring or something around it or in the intake before it. Intake it when you run it at home, you turn the water on after it’s started and off before it...

    Troubleshooting a leak

Very unusual finish or colouring below the inner transom assembly there. Looks all brown and not like the rest of the white finish on the transom. Is that from the leak staining or is it wood showing from a repair ? Probably wouldn’t be wood in the transom at that age of boat I’d assume though...

How to operate side mount throttle for 1993 Yamaha jet?

You think these will have the usual 703 box fitted ? You might be right. But being a jet drive, I just presumed otherwise perhaps. But in all honesty, I’ve never actually seen a jet outboard in the flesh. Just presumed that there would need to be a set up that allowed throttle and operation of...

Sport Jet 175 x2 with low compression

Hi. Ok. So your idle will be low for sure then. When she is in the water. You really want to be setting the idle up when in the water really. Is the fuel definitely good ? Carbs clean ? Lots of things can effect this. Needs to be warmed up and in the water to set up properly.

Have 14x19 4 blade on 4.3 GXi. Upgrade to Stainless Steel worthwhile?

Being nosey. Just had a look and pressed on your name there. Oh man…you’ve got the dream there. Is that your own boat lift by the water ? What a thing. If I was to move across the pond..I’d be after a similar set up. Lucky fella. What boat is that out of interest ? What does she have powering...

Mercruiser 7.4 Oil Pressure Alarm Goes Off Randomly?

Agree with AD…usual suspect to rule out is the gear oil header tank low, if you have one. That’s most commonly setting the alarm off randomly…if it’s just on the edge of low. Perhaps you have already ruled this and overheating out as not to blame though.

    Speedometer tube

Hi. If it’s not doing any harm as it is…and going to cost you money…I wouldn’t bother. The pitot speed reading is as good as guessing. My dash Speedo can go off the clock and indicating a presumed speed well ober 70 mph. But the gps will show late 60’s. The difference between the two can vary...

    Troubleshooting a leak

Looks in the picture as if it’s coming from the integrals above in the inner transom shield. Do you also inspect the gear change bellow ? Or just the bigger ones ? It’s the gear change bellow that will let water in.

How to operate side mount throttle for 1993 Yamaha jet?

Any pictures? You should normally have a one of a few types. Usual of all would be a throttle and a forward and reverse. You will likely have a trim setting for the jet nozzle too perhaps. There will be a kill switch lanyard attachment somewhere too.

Sport Jet 175 x2 with low compression

Hi. I think you’re just about ok with that compression and gauges can be a little low or high sometimes. As long as they are all similar across them all. So for now…rule that out I’d say. As for the low idle. What’s it meant to be ? Are you reporting this as in the water or out the water idle...

Have 14x19 4 blade on 4.3 GXi. Upgrade to Stainless Steel worthwhile?

I personally think that you can get away with most things, by propping with a good quality 3 blade stainless prop. But if it’s just for towing and pulling…there ain’t much a better prop for just that, than a high 5 prop. It’s just what they are designed for. Very very good at just doing this...

    2000 Bayliner Misfire?

Good stuff. Years ago I was on a bayliner 2855 with a 5.7 carb. Was in rough weather, it started running terribly and cut out. I ended up taking the pick up pipe out the tank for a look. The bottom of it had gunk trying to clog up. So did the non return check valve in the line too. I temporarily...

Slow plane at high altitude 5.0L MPI, please help

Excellent. Let us know how you get on. I think these things run at their best when propped near the top end of the rpms. Definitely need to be above 4700/4800 top end, to be at their best. You should also buy a VesselView mobile device for your mpi too. Amazing for many reasons…especially for...

4.3 TKS "Run On" fixed but Slight Loss in Performance

Fair play ! I’d have a few more trial runs to see how she goes perhaps. Like you’ll know…speed can wildly vary between attempts.

4.3 TKS "Run On" fixed but Slight Loss in Performance

Ah. That’s news to me. Every day is a school day. I knew the mpi version called for iridium. But not the carb. Certainly the older carbs were all br6 variants. Didn’t know the tks newer models called for these. Can’t think why. Someone who knows more than I will answer that perhaps. It’s...

    Circa 2008 4.3 GXi (SX-A) Possible to increase power/performance?

Hi. Quite a common issue, on boats in the 18-20ft class with the 4.3 gxi/mpi. They require a very carefully and well selected prop to see them at their best. They really can be gutless down low with too much prop pitch. It’s a very fine balance to get it as good as she can be. Having propped a...

    2000 Bayliner Misfire?

Hi. I’d start simple and prove it’s not the fuel that’s causing this. Dip the fuel supply pipe into a Jerry can of known fresh fuel and see how she runs. As in, bypassing and ruling out the fuel tank and supply as being the cause.
