Older boat/ motor and New Electronics

You typically use a battery selector switch for multiple batteries. There are switches that will switch for charging automatically

Older boat/ motor and New Electronics

I think the flashers and paper chart fish finders of those days ( their name escapes me at the moment ) took more power than modern fish finders. Truth is with a second house battery and automatic switching if you so choose will work fine

Mercruiser Oil Pan Replacement and Protection

Timing covers are cheap. Idk why you wouldn’t change it

    hei ignition retrofit

A team performance is a skip white type deal. If it says marine rated it’s a fake rating

    1986 seaswirl nightmare

Cobra isn’t a bad drive but it’s got finicky shift adjustments. Sounds like it’s totally out of adjustment

78 StarCraft American Transom Rebuild. There's no way cap is epoxy right???

pretty much all fiberglass boats are polyester. You will have easier access to the stringers and deck which are most likely rotted as well by pulling the cap

    Single Person Loader?

I have an automatic latch system new hanging on a peg. Given to me because the person didn’t know how to use it, and it hangs there because neither do I.. it pretty much looks like garbage I wouldn’t trust

Buying used items. What's the worst thing a seller has ever tried to do to you.

I once drove several hours to look at an 87 corvette. I was assured that it was operating correctly and could make the trip back. It wasn’t being sold as mint condition but he did want like $6k. When I got there, the engine smoked like a chimney, coolant and check engine light were on and tires...

    1972 Starcraft Chieftain 21ft IB/OB project

That’s probably a decent deal. See if you can get the engine running and verify the drive is good. The least work option will be repairing what you have. It’s old but those old Volvos are good drives. The transom keyhole is larger than Mercruiser. I’m a mercruiser person but it depends on how...

    Best home generator?

You really can’t do better than the biggest portable generator from Harbor Freight. If you are wanting wheeled. ( portable) It would only be gas powered but you can convert it. Generac, champion, and most of the others except Honda ($$$$) are basically the same machines as the HF predators… one...

    1972 Starcraft Chieftain 21ft IB/OB project

The 4.3L may prove too wide for your liking. Putting it in requires omitting the rear jump seats and possibly making fishing access tighter if you remove them. Later islanders did come with 4.3L though so it is still a good option

    1972 Starcraft Chieftain 21ft IB/OB project

Yes I understand. Repower the boat with a unit from a cheap rotted glass boat. You will save thousands

    1972 Starcraft Chieftain 21ft IB/OB project

Just buy a cheap rotted glasser. Volvo was used in many old boats including bayliner if you don’t want to mess with the keyhole. A 3.0L will run that fine. They were optioned with them if they came in the mercruiser flavor. My dad had a ‘73 with the 3.0L and it was fast enough. Gen 2 isn’t...

1993 four winns sundowner 195 transom rot discovered

This is the reason I look at fiberglass boats as parts boats for my tin boats. You could try to get by for the season with CPES or something and a Botch repair but with water entering the bilge as is, how safe would you feel

    Looking at a 1987 Bayliner 2160 Hardtop ???

Well a Bayliner Trophy 2160 hardtop would be one reason to gamble on a Cobra Drive. That said. That’s a big heavy boat. The 3.0L is either a base engine or one that somebody swapped in. I know they were common with 4.3’s and that was enough. My dad’s current fishing barge is a 1986 Mark Twain...

Going to look at a possibly seized engine tomorrow

470 can be swapped with a 3.0L as a near bolt in if you don’t mind a major HP loss. 4.3L replaced it but will require mounting adjustments. The 470 is a cool peice of engineering that mercruiser abandoned before it had all the kinks worked out. 40 years later, it should really be avoided…. A...

    Bayliner floor replacement

If the floor isn’t soft then I would be thankful and just keep using it while you can… doing work like that could be a can of worms you aren’t prepared for

    Eco carb cleaners?

Boil a carb in a light solution of lemon juice. I did 4 CB 500/4 carbs with that trick. They were seized and packed with varnish. Too much lemon juice can pull the zinc coating off any parts that have it so you need to be careful if anything is zinc coated

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

Fairly common. Parts between 2 back to back years should swap. As long as they are in the same generation. The last generation of 20-35hp came in 1977 if I recall. 1976 would be different
