2005 4.3 liter Mercruiser ignition trouble

so now you need to find out where you're losing your ignition voltage. you get 12v at the coil with ignition on? you can check resistance across connections but better off doing a voltage drop test

    Shift cable bellows.

ok, I think I see what you're talking about. one of the two items to the left of the gasket here?: https://a.co/d/hiZTmmU

    Shift cable bellows.

find a picture of the grommet. I don't think anyone has any idea of what this part is.

Stretched Shift cable. Cut to shorten?

the slide should have some play but not much. tighten the set screw and the back off a touch until the slide can rotate freely.

    Oil Pressure Sender failure modes?

Nope. ALL connections everywhere were redone when the engine was out this spring. Cannon plug was disconnected and cleaned (again... done in the spring). None of the other gauges are acting strangely (same 12v supply). As mentioned, not really possible to t into my sender the way things are set...

Found some rocks with my prop...

Bought it new from Amazon (not 3rd party). The lovely paint job is mine after repairing. Guess it could be counterfeit or misrepresented

Found some rocks with my prop...

Yeah, I was kinda looking for a reason to buy a new one :p

    Oil Pressure Sender failure modes?

Already did all that, no changes. Have put about 50 miles on the "new" sender including some good chop with no recurrence so far...

Found some rocks with my prop...

Here are a few before and after pics. If by "body dolly", Scott meant "cinder block and stairs", then check. Actually came out better than the pics show, they caught the light a bit strange. https://photos.app.goo.gl/s4sfFk3FSJm6eYHf9

    Mercruiser 5.0 MPI hydro locked

Pressure test the cooling system, either replacing the manifold or blocking off the intake ports.

    Knocking when turning

Places that the drive gets stuck: 1. Prior to entering coupler. --Can happen if the driveshaft isn't parallel to axis of the line from the gimbal to the coupler. When inserting the drive, make sure everything is on the same plane. Distance between the drive and bellhousing should be the same at...

    Oil Pressure Sender failure modes?

Yeah, I already did (with a 40 year old spare that I had), and it is an auto can type. I'm just curious as to how they fail moreso than how to troubleshoot the system. Of course intermittent electrical issues are tough.

    Oil Pressure Sender failure modes?

Intermittent failure in a difficult location. Not really possible to T in there. Like I said, if this was a real pressure then I wouldn't have been able to take the kids skiing this am lol.

    Oil Pressure Sender failure modes?

TL;DR: What would cause an oil pressure sender to fluctuate between reading correctly and reading zero? Been chasing an oil pressure gauge/issue all summer. Mercruiser, standard analog sender/gauge. It will run fine for long stretches of time, steady at 60 psi, then drop to "zero" (actually...

Found some rocks with my prop...

Hell, maybe I'll just straighten it out and call it a day. I'll post some pics when I get around to it. Like I said, I never hit anything so not too concerned about the lower unit and wondering if I'd see a difference with a fancy SS prop. I'd just be looking for a eBay deal over the off season

    Popped through the intake.

Yes, for sure first test should be to determine whether this is fuel or electrical. Like that post, I love to throw a timing light on each plug wire as a first step. Not bullet proof, but if everything is firing it lowers the probability of an ignition problem.

    Popped through the intake.

My point was that if it's running rough it's probably more than one dropped cylinder.

    Best rust loosening material

I totally reuse nails. And lumber. The sea walls/piers around here use wood that makes the pressure treated stuff at the big boxes look environmentally friendly, and some serious SS nails. Both are incredibly expensive and difficult for the average joe to obtain...
