OMC Cobra 4.3 block interchangeable? Help

is that the casting number (back by the bellhousing) or the GM serial # (up on the front right hand side of the block? You go by casting numbers for the identification of changes in the engine series, the serial number won't really help figure that out. There were a lot of changes in the 4.3, a...

    Happiest Day of Ownership !!!

yeah, the outdrives....just installed mine, this year is slid right on with no bad language needed for persuasion...got lucky lol. Just pulling the drive and doing the maintenance every year and replacing bellows before they leak, will add years to your I/O drive system life span. This one is...

    Gimbal bearing.

sometimes you have to use a bit of heat and a couple of picks to move stubborn hoses, a little silicone spray helps too.

89 460 OMC water System piece?

Exactly. The drain plug on those coolers is really tough to get at. What I do is disconnect the raw water inlet hose at the thermostat housing, hold it down to drain the hose. There is a water drain on the port side of the pivot housing on the transom mount, if this is not clogged, it should...

    OMC shift cable

I have heard of the cables stretching with regards to the Cobras but that usually happens when the shifter bell crank in the pivot housing is jammed up with deposits or the ESA isn’t functioning and the owner has to force it into gear or into N. Mine has had the same cable over 20 years & shifts...

If you can't find a trailer scale where you are located....

Weighed it again today with the outdrive on & 1/4 tank of gas, was sure to level the boat side to side and got about the same numbers. Total 5050 lbs, 4650 on the axle. Way more than F/W's estimated weight. When I launch the boat I'll weigh the trailer (I'm guessing 850-950 or so lbs) that would...

    carter mech fuel pump

As far as the gaskets, see if you can find a Merc parts catalog breakdown and see what they did way back when it was new. Might show you the way. found it: https://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/subassembly/31888/1014/120

    Gimbal bearing.

Have to agree on that newer style Merc single point drain, I've never seen so many plastic fittings, hoses all over the place, just to avoid doing what it SHOULD have in the first place, a closed cooling system! With that you can use a pressurized tank hooked up to the muffs and run -100 AF...

    Gimbal bearing.

Well I like the grease-able but here's a data point: our oldest Jeep is a 1998 Grand Cherokee purchased new 24 years ago. Current mileage is 180,000. Front wheel bearings are the sealed type never been replaced and this has been driven through many north east winters and on the beach (salt water...

lubricate impeller with what? Volvo 3L

lol! First start of the season I disconnect the raw water intake hose at the thermo housing after hooking up the muffs and fill the raw water intake line with a mix of water and Dawn dish soap. That lubes the impeller before the water even gets up there from the hose.

    Anyone running the new 4.5?

My brother has one in his 2020 Chapparal with the 200 hp version they run very smooth and start and run like a modern car. Oil changes very easy, manual drain seems to work well. However, they have the cat converter exhaust, which adds downstream and upstream O2 sensors, that can cause trouble....

Does EFI solve the hard start/cranking issue?

Never had a 2 stroke outboard but my carbed 2 stroke yard engines (all 5 of them) all start up on the 2nd or 3rd pull. My carbed 4.3 I/O usually starts on the first or 2nd crank on a cold start, warm starts like a half a revolution of the crank... I do agree that EFI makes for fuss free use, but...
