    Engine Alignment?

I think that stringer design is a hold over from having an OMC stringer engine. Newer transom mount enignes like yo are putting in only have a block of wood or built up ply wood tp the left of the area whwer y are thinking of making a notch. I would remove the stringer aft of wher you want the...

    Grounding coil for compression test

Yes take it off distributor and put it on a grounding point on block or intake. it allows a path to ground for the spark , just like in your spark plugs when they fire... Or as AD pointed out you can disconnect the two bullet connections to distributor sensor and no spark will be made.

New 15x17 pitch prop on Merc 165 L6

Proper pitch for the application is everything. You are better to be a tad underpropped vs overpropped. What is the reccomended WOT for that engine? What type of prop did you buy - Black max?

Which gasket is better for impeller install, metal or fiber?

Being in the middle of this repair myself I asked the merc tech line if sealant was needed with the newer style metal gaskets. Their answer was no for either the fiber or newer metal gasket-not sure if pic will copy over but its the kit with metal gasket... Thank you for your email regarding...

4.3 V6 valve steam seals replacement

overthinking it, yes … i hope u leave some time to enjoy using the boat. Obviously you enjoy working on it and want it kept in good condition but don’t fix what isn‘t broken. the valve cover gasket that is not available currently will fit the other one i dont know. Best to contact summit or...

4.3 V6 valve steam seals replacement

No oil use no smoke = no problem with seals. Compression test will not show valve seal leaks. If you had good compression but were using oil and blowing blue smoke.... that would point to seals. But if you have good compression and no oil use that points to nothing is wrong with your engine...

4.3 V6 valve steam seals replacement

Unless you are burning oil I would not bother to replace the valve stem seals. It seems like you only have a valve cover leak not a buring oil issue. How many hours are on the engine? While it is possible to do with the head on the engine, it is a pain to compress the the valve spring with...

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

I got a new base engine from Mich Motorz 6 years ago, it was $200 shipping to my work, maybe 150 more to a residence with out a loading dock. I spent about another $500-600 on gaskets, gimbal bearing water pump. You may want to look at your rear engine mounts in the flywheel cover and change...

    Old manifold question

I think the earlier 150 hp/230 cid version of the straight six was offered with that or a 2 bbl rochester. May have been like '65 or '66 years

Which gasket is better for impeller install, metal or fiber?

Good to replace the thermostat and zero the milage one wear items if you just bought it and dont have a history on it. By the dash guage my similar boat - 5.0/Alpha gen two runs about 165-170 with a 160 degree thermostat. so Id say you are fine. FWIW stick with OEM impellers, I just changed...

    Antifreeze circulation through engine

Your plugs may be different if its older. Older ones used hex pipe plugs- there will be one on each side halfway down the block just above the oil pan rail. Not all exhaust manifold cooling fittings have plugs, you just remove the hoses to drain. The big U hose at the front of the block now has...

MerCruiser 8.2 big block 2014 — shuts off after 5-7 min of running

I would agree with AD you are loosing the 12 v run power intremittently, the only thing getting hit may be the breaker as mentioned. Do yoiu have power at the helm when this happens? You will need to trace this out to and from the key with a voltmeter

    Piston Damage?

I would second this , run it. All you have to loose is the labor for cylinder head install. I had a spark plug center electrode drop out on a toytota 3.3 V6. Wife said the engine is making noise. Rattling tapping etc from top end , nothing wrong with valves, first plug I pull was missing the...

Merc prop on VP with Hub Kit?

yes if it has a replaceable hub you need a Michigan XHS 205 kit or Merc equivalent. these are interchangable with merc Flo Torq hubs. Unfortunatley VP and Merc take different hubs.... Heres two examples

    2002 Yamaha XLT 1200 winterization

Ok I was leary of just blowing the water out but that confirms it. This is in a very cold area so I think worth the $20 of AF... Is there jet pump lube to change like on my Seadoo? And if so is it obvious wher the drain/fill ports are? I havent found any youtubes on this so Im asusming it is...

    2002 Yamaha XLT 1200 winterization

A good friend just picked this ski up earlier in the summer. He asked if I could help him winterize it this weekend. Any one know what is required? I've seen a lot of videos saying Yammies are slef draining just rev it up, which I find hard to belive. I have done my mercruiser powered boats...

Quadra Jet: cross threaded fuel intake fitting

depending on how bad your existing threads are the dorman piece may work better than a helicoil for you. The dorman piece should cut new threads farther in the casting, so if they arent too messed up this may be a better way to go
