    Strange exhaust behavior during winterizing

I’m not familiar with your engine if you can take a zoomed out pic so I can see the hose routing to the manifolds & elbows that would help. I’m guessing you have a Mercruiser with the warm manifolds set up where the elbows & manifolds have separate feeds from the thermostat housing. Let’s see a...

changing from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel carburetor

If you've never done it before it can be intimidating. I had to do it because my head gaskets started leaking back in '16, and I wanted to try to save the engine, since it was always a good runner. And being that I am in salt water, raw water cooled engine, I didn't think I could get it apart...

changing from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel carburetor

Another data point I can recall from the past, not boats but cars. 2 of our family vehicles 1972 Chevrolet Impala 5.7 V8, 2bbl Rochester, 3 speed GM Hydramatic 1975 Olds Delta 88, 5.7 V8, 4bbl Rochester Quadrajet, 3 speed GM Hydramatic the Olds weighed a few hundred lbs more than the Chevy, not...

For Cobra guys who have water in the gear oil….

http://www.sterndrive.info/water_pump_installation.html scroll down to the bottom of that page, it's the last item on the page. they make them up for you so there is a bit of a lead time.

For Cobra guys who have water in the gear oil….

www.sterndrive.info AKA TC Electronics and Marine in Ontario, Canada also forgot to mention, the water pump adapter has 2 o rings on it, a large one on its circumference and a smaller one on the back side that seals around where the water pump shaft bearing is. That smaller one on mine was...

For Cobra guys who have water in the gear oil….

One of the main causes of this is the water pump seal in the water pump adapter which is what the impeller housing bolts onto. There is a you tube video by Micheal Roemer that explains an easier way to do this than what’s in the shop manual. To change that seal the water pump adapter has to come...

    Strange exhaust behavior during winterizing

Yes just disconnect the hose feeding the manifold at the thermostat housing & fill each manifold. Make sure to use PG antifreeze not EG and for engine protection. I use the -100 because the -50 or -60 gets hard at a few degrees above zero. Depends on how cold it gets where you are…

    Strange exhaust behavior during winterizing

Agreed I don't like that single point drain, you don't know if the block drains for sure drained, if in freshwater it might work OK but here in the salt pond, I wouldn't trust it. In fact sometimes you have to rod the drains out just to get it to drain. Some say to remove the whole single point...

    Seized engine

One thing I learned working on marine engines with water cooled exhaust…if all the sudden it seems to not be running right or seems to crank really slow, the FIRST thing g you check is for water in the cyls. I had leaky head gaskets reluctance to start & rough running for the first few min of...

Help choosing an older cruiser - 1993 Chris Craft Crown 262 or 1995 Rinker 265 Fiesta Vee

In salt water I/Os take a lot of extra maintenance; it can be done and I’ve done it but unless you commit to staying on top of it, you’ll wind up regretting it. In the So Cal coastal area strongly consider outboard power unless you plan on doing what I’ve done for 20+ years. And due to my age...

Question about paint chips in fuel system

Did the manufacturer really stick the engines under an un-movable hatch? If so, this is why some people will never have another inboard or I/O. But, if you can get to it, go for it!

    Fuel starvation conundrum

OMC actually has a spec for anti-siphon valves, the original and replacement ones are both what they say you have to have. I tested the one that was in there and the new one (identical) that I replaced it with both test the same, the ball opens at 1"-2" Hg when tested with the vacuum pump. OMC's...

Well Here in salt water land All the rot I ever had has nothing to do whether the boat was on a trailer or on a salt water mooring. It’s the climate (damp, cool most of the year) and rain (frequent). Freshwater rots boats salt water not so much.

    Fuel starvation conundrum

I think you’re right. The carb on the boat had been run on the E0 94 octane fuel for about 3 hrs and I had to winterize it due to the temps starting to drop into the 30s here at night. I have to figure out what to do with the fuel. Over the winter I want to replace the rest of the fuel lines &...

    Fuel starvation conundrum

No that's a big difference, the fuel in the main tank is mid range pump gas E-10 (89 AKI) the fuel in the portable tank is E-0 94 octane and was fresh, just bought it in Sept when I was doing the tests. Only one gas station around here sells it, and it's like $7.50 a gallon, I wanted to try it...

    Fuel starvation conundrum

I've been running this engine on 89 pump octane fuel for 20+ years with no problems like this one, except back in 2004, and that was the last time the anti siphon valve was replaced. In fact it says to use 89 AKI octane right on the flame arrestor....and the #s on our road gas pumps, are AKI...

    Fuel starvation conundrum

Ok tested the old pick up tube/anti siphon valve & fuel line. Pulled a vacuum of 10”hg held steady for 2 hrs. Also tested under pressure 10 psi with soapy water on all connections and no bubbles no apparat leaks. What say you I boaters? Back to the bad fuel idea? Only other thing I can think of...

Pink Super Tech (Walmart) -50 RV and Marine ok for engine?? I always thought NO...??

Always go by the lowest temp expected in your area. If it's zero, then you want -100 because both the -50 and -60 solidify but don't expand at approx zero degrees. I don't want anything that gets solidified in a cast iron engine. -100 stays liquid down to -55*F. I also will mix up my own Sierra...

    Fuel starvation conundrum

I've heard of those causing trouble, the original one was just an aluminum tube screwed into the square fitting, no screen. The one I replaced it with (Moeller) also has no screen. When I took it apart, it was completely clean, no debris in the tube or anti siphon valve. Bottom of tank was clean...
