Opinions of engine owners. Least trouble and lower cost. Carburetor or F I ?

I was working an early 70’s Mercury O/B last winter. I think the only ignition parts readily available for it was the spark plugs.

I get what is being said about sourcing parts but, as an owner of 2 Willys jeeps, most parts available for the old stuff is crap unless you can score new old stock. Ignition parts seem to be the worst. There have been a lot of horror stories about gears and bearings not being hardened to spec.

It can be hard to find boat parts for boats 5 years old. I know of one manufacturer that won’t talk to you if the boat is more than 5 years old.

I have become a big fan of EFI over the years. I love being able to bump the key and go any time, any temperature. Not needing to constantly work on it is a plus too.

Would that be an indicator for a 2-stroke oil tank?

How can I make my Tracker 40 HP faster?

the installed propeller diameter and pitch would be good to post with the RPM info requested. What is visible in the picture is raising questions and the wrong prop can make a huge impact on how a boat runs. The numbers should be on the prop although sometimes the numbers on the prop are just...

    Best Jet Drive

I had mine in the early 1990s. The second one was a Force outboard mounted to an 18’ tunnel hull john boat. I loved it unless I managed to plug it up with rocks or vegetation. The tunnel let me run places I never thought possible without an airboat. I frequently hauled 4-wheelers on it during...

    Trailer Tongue Too Long?

I used to fish a small lake that had a shallow ramp. Hated it. Rear axles on the truck would get wet before the boat would float. Nothing like wading to and from the door of the truck. Electric only lake so firing up the big motor to assist unloading and loading was frowned upon.

    Best Jet Drive

I don’t recall operating the 2 jets I owned any different than I have run the props since. I ran whatever power I needed. Seldom WOT on either. Maybe more often with the prop. The jets could be a little aggravating because they didn’t sit still in “neutral”.

    Testing my temp gauge

First step is to check the connections. A pot of hot water works well if you have a good thermometer to compare readings throughout the scale or just want to see if the needle moves. Water boils at 212 degrees with some variance for barometric pressure just to find out if it’s working and...

    Trailer Tongue Too Long?

6’ tow vehicle wheelbase? That’s shorter than a Suzuki Samurai. Quick to respond… over correcting? It shouldn’t take long to get used to it. A front mounted hitch is a good thing. Much easier to see what is going on, especially going around corners. My little tractor has a quick release...

Rapid trailer jerk at higher speeds

I had this happen on my F150. The further I went the worse it got because the heat build up was expanding parts and making them tighter. I had to crawl under the truck and beat on the parking brake linkage at the drum to get it to release. Some of the pivot joints had corroded just enough that...

1996 mariner 30 hot start issues -- at my wit's end

My experience with hot start problems on most non-EFI applications is an overly rich mixture. That’s why opening the throttle works. It allows more air into the intake. It may be the same with EFI but there are other issues if an EFI engine needs more air to start when hot.

    Arghh! Freakin raccoon.

When I was in high school, a friend and I hunted raccoons for fur. We could get as much as $40 for one skinned and stretched. We encountered a big female one night. I had alternated solids and hollow points in the .22 long rifle magazine. She had 13 holes when we skinned her. 5 were in the...

    Arghh! Freakin raccoon.

I trap in a live trap then dispatch with .22 short unless it is a skunk. Being within city limits and between 2 law enforcement officers does limit my options. Raccoons killed all my chickens one year so I bought a dog proof leg hold trap. It worked pretty good for 2 of the 3 raccoons and one...

    F115 - no signal to #2 injector

Sometimes disconnecting and reconnecting a harness can get things working. If that fails then I would do a continuity check on the wire followed by checking for the signal coming from the ECU.

Reminder to check gear before towing.

I got an old Mercury motor running for a buddy a while back. It belonged to his grandfather. His plan was to use it on a small boat to push docks and slips around. On the first job, his crew pulled the motor, carried the boat to the trailer and loaded it then set the motor unsecured on the...

    Enough is enough

We have cameras and motion activated lights but when my wife got nervous about the possibility of someone coming around because I had them arrested, I loaded the gun and made sure she knew how to use it.

    What Thrust Size Trolling Motor?

I can see the reasons behind such a setup for trolling, even on smaller lakes. I haven’t trolled for fish much. Occasionally on a “no wake” lake while crossing using the big motor is about all I have ever done. The biggest walleye I ever caught was caught that way. It would not take near as...

    What Thrust Size Trolling Motor?

My 17’ G3 came with a 12 volt 45. I got tired of not moving in a 10 mph wind. Currently have 24 volt 65 and am happy it. Boat weighs around 1100 empty.
