5.7 Vortec Runs Great On Land but Bogs Under Load in Water

Yeah not 100 % sure edlebrock calls it a step up piston. Power piston may be a hold over from my rochester 2 jet/ mercarb days … either way we are talking about the same thing.

5.7 Vortec Runs Great On Land but Bogs Under Load in Water

I noticed on my vortec that the electrode discoloration is not consistent around the entire electrode, which is kind of what i see here . I get more of a brownish, and im running a tad on rich side (13.25-13.5 afr at cruise , 12.0-12.5 at wot)

Help me identify this part & our issue

Here is a parts breakdown, https://www.marineengine.com/parts/mercruiser-sterndrive-parts/30l-mpi-ec/1a072812-up/cylinder-head-and-rocker-cover Looks like it is a vent to the manifold - sucks blow by into intake. Entirely possible if this is popping out it is creating a vacuum leak that lets...

    Bellows ?

I think its more personal preference, I have no personal experience using the tube but I could see on plane and trimmed up it making more noise, probably depends on what engine how you trim it etc. I can say this my boat with torn exhaust bellows was no louder than non torn so I can't see it...

1996 Bravo 3 Aluminum ring for u-joint bellows

It is what holds/seals the bellows to the bellhousing so yes it is quite necessary. Merc makes a tool to install it , and most folks use merc power tune sprayed on it to make it slick as 'ell. I used a storm water grate piece (fits in a female pipe fitting) pushing it with a 5 lb mallet (BFH)...

    Bellows ?

Some folks swear by the tube due to ease of installing. I did not find the exhaust bellows too difficult to install if you have the expander tool

Original prop size for 1976 starcraft chieftain mk Iv 25 foot with 165 merc

This is the best advice here, best to prop it so you can hit the upper end of rpm spec. Not that you have run it that rpm, just will be a more lively boat if its pitched correctly. What ever you do don’t put the 19” back on it as it will put more strain on the engine lugging it.

Swapping 88' 454 Truck Engine to Replace 93' Mercruiser 454

Head gaskets and core plugs are likely different between a truck engine and a marine engine. Generally cam should be similar enough to marine if its the factory truck cam

the piston that the step up rod is attached to , its what the vacuum pulls down and release to be lean or rich.

5.7 Vortec Runs Great On Land but Bogs Under Load in Water

Based on being rich would think the needle and seat/ float arent working or power piston is stuck in rich position. Dose it have the stock jets and step up rods in it? Would make sure vacum isnt low for some reason which would make it go rich all the time
