    Replacing 1978 351 c.i. V-8 OMC Stern Drive in 1978 Starcraft 21' ...recommends (?)

Carbs and EFI have their place. However in a boat carb would be my preference over EFI First, EFI does not get you any more power or economy However mainly because in 15 years after the boat is built the EFI bits are NLA and the carb bits are still available from 2000 different sources Not...

    Replacing 1978 351 c.i. V-8 OMC Stern Drive in 1978 Starcraft 21' ...recommends (?)

First, welcome aboard Second, to swap to any other motor/drive combination you will need to rebuild your transom and stringers. You will NOT find something that fits your current hole Your current OMC motor and drive is completely different than anything else Assume $1500 USD for materials...

    Johnson 1987 pistons

You won't find a bore gauge at harbor freight, but you can get a cheap one from Amazon for about $125

    Johnson 1987 pistons

use a bore gauge and measure the bores (top, mid-stroke and bottom). you will most likely find that a re-bore is in order as you will find the bore egg shaped and tapered.

Staying warm on boat in the winter

We used to go boating with temps in the 20's and 30s. Here is the rough rule of thumb 50s. Sweatshirt, wind breaker, sensible hat and gloves. May consider socks 40s. Jacket, heavy shirt. Heavy socks, good hat, gloves 30s. Snowmobile suit, or winter jacket and ski pants, heavy socks...

    Volvo 4.3L Pre-Vortec to Vortec

The 4.3 was a roller cam motor in 1988. The 1993-1995 motors are balance shaft motors. The 1996 and later just got the vortec heads. So the cheapest and easiest option for the OP is simply swap the heads and intake

    Volvo 4.3L Pre-Vortec to Vortec

I personally would pull your current motor, take it to a machine shop, rebuild the short block and just buy new vortec heads.

    Volvo 4.3L Pre-Vortec to Vortec

Get a vortec marine long block, or rebuild yours and add vortec heads. Bolt your stuff on it BTW, what do you mean by tons of hours? Most motors will go well over 4000 hours with maintenance Vortec heads good for 20-30hp on the 4.3

    1998 Regal 1700 LSR Advice

AD, what you see in the pic is the resin/glass/gel busted out as the wet wood underneath swelled up. that hunk of wood sits above the keel void. there is most likely water under the wood. having seen this on many rebuilds, its not a trivial thing.

    1998 Regal 1700 LSR Advice

Your boat uses wood as a core under the fiberglass. So to answer your question The transom (with fiberglass on both sides) The stringers (with fiberglass on all sides) The motor mounts (withe fiberglass) The deck (with fiberglass on both sides) Read this to understand boat construction...

    1998 Regal 1700 LSR Advice

first, welcome aboard. second, the second pic show some concerning issues as that damage only comes from wet core material that freezes. Wet wood means that is is starting to rot (and will not dry out) Hammer test means nothing. I would start planning a hull restoration. 4th sticky down at...
