78 Johnson 115 Running Great! But Bow of Boat is "Plowing"?

When it starts to porpoise, it's too high. Trim down one or two taps You should be dang near wearing out the trim switch. For the holeshot. Trim all the way in, mash throttle, and as boat is coming out the hole, trim up until it porpoises, then tap the trim down once or twice As you back...

    Too big to beach?

If you have a keel guard, then beach away. Without a keel guard, you will grind thru the fiberglass in a dozen beachings My last boat was beached every outing. 3000# dry, 4000# with people, fuel, and gear My current boat will be getting a keel guard and 6-rung bow ladder soon.

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

Missed that @cdavy000 , I would do a good cleaning of your original carb Little anecdotal information. Briggs and Stratton bought carbs from Guangzhou china for their snow engines back in the late 2000's early 2010's. The reason is so that they could be competitive (or so they claimed)...

    Outboard life expectancy

Replacement power heads are easier and cheaper for Mercury and other manufacturers for current production motors. 1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

Something is wrong with your carb. It should start to stumble below 3/4 turn and die about the time you get less than 1/2 turn out All the way in should shut off all fuel to the idle circuit

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

Where did you get a new Rochester carb? You should not be able to turn more than 2.5 turns out before the motor runs so rich your eyes water If you bought an Amazon special (chineseum carb), I would take your original cab and rebuild it.

283 stalls when engine cover closed

I have never seen a bilge that is air tight. Additionally the bilge venting should be flowing 300cfm minimum. So the motor should run to at least 4000 RPM Post pics

Need help with winterizing first boat

After you change the engine oil and filters. You drain the motor The 4.3 should also have the plug at the thermostat cross over. That will make 5 plugs Pull the hoses going to the raw water pump to drain them Check the drive gear oil for water. Change if needed. Also highly recommend...
