    Sportcraft Li'l Sport, worth restoring?

its worth more sentimentally to you than it would be to restore to flip. cool little boat. I would restore it just for the cool factor. would make a fun little dinghy sitting on the swim platform of a 50 footer.

    Water in the intake

pull the elbow. look at the joint faces. not the outside of it. you are in troubleshooting mode. you have about a day to clean that water out of the motor and either have the motor running, or need to flush all the surfaces with alcohol then oil until you get it running.

    Water in the intake

gasket looks fine. looks like vortec intake gasket. the heat exchanger is only a half system, so the manifolds would only last a few years in salt water. post a pic of the manifold to riser joint.

    Jet Engine vs Mud motor

jet boats will bounce off big rocks and suck up small rocks, however are generally better for skinny water than a standard outboard. you do loose a lot of efficiency mud motors still have a prop, prop may still hit rocks. Most are lawn and garden motors with a tail fitted, so sound deadening...

    Water in the intake

Since you already yanked the intake, you can not pressure test. Pull the exhaust. If you have rust streaks in the ports, then you have leaking exhaust manifolds I myself would be pulling the motor and do a full teardown and inspection

Those with MPIs what do you do with your leftover storage gas mix?

If you mixed the 2-stroke oil at 50:1, run it in the blower or string trimmer If you mixed at 32:1, run it in your chainsaw

    Water in the intake

That is water in the crank case. Potential sources: Cracked block Cracked head(s) Failed intake manifold Failed exhaust manifolds Cracked intake Leaking intake manifold gasket Leaking head gasket

    Water in the intake

Use Felpro for the gasket. if you have water in the intake, you have a leak somewhere. if you have water in the exhaust, check the condition of the manifold to elbow joint.

Thought my boat would be faster

iff and that is a big if..... the 2.5 runs perfect, the prop is perfect, the winds are perfect and the boat actually weights 1350#, then the boat could do upper 30s and may hit 40 mph. that is based on my old 16 foot boat (that did weigh the 1650# it was supposed to after I did the transom)...

Buying a used boat with Mercruiser 228

Check the transom around the transom shield. If you see signs of moisture or cracking on the inside that is a red flag If the transom shield has caulk on the outside that is a red flag If you look in the bilge or ski locker and you see two floors, that is a red flag
