    Cold Start Problems 5.7

Easy Carb to work on, I have it on my 5.7 in my Avatar. You are probably on the right Track, looking at the Accelerator Pump. Is the lever sticky/slow to respond? It might just need Cleaning, if that doesn't help... It is quite simple to take apart. Remove the Fuel Line from the Inlet on the...

    3.7 to 4.3 swap

The fuel economy of WOT on a small engine in a Boat, vs a bigger Engine at Part Throttle, has be discussed/documented for over the past 70 yrs. All of them have concluded that the Bigger engine did better. The one time I was on Salty Water, not true Ocean water, was in Vancouver BC, Burrard...

    Oil Type?

Volvo used to Specify Full Synthetic SAE30 Looking in the Volvo Service Manual(2002), they do recommend the Volvo Oil, but do list Temperature Viscosity 32° F (0° C) + SAE 30* SAE 20W/50...

    Which oil to use?

If Volvo is Speccing a 0W-20 Oil it has it's reasons, and 15W-50 is a lot thicker, Cold and Hot, than what is Specified, which means it might not flow as readily. While there are Plenty of Automotive Oils that meet the Viscosity Requirements, they might not be the best Choices in a Marine...

    3.7 to 4.3 swap

The only time you will save fuel with smaller engine is idling in Neutral. The larger engines will match the smaller one's WOT Speed, at part throttle and usually be burning less fuel doing so.

Carbed 4.3 timing adjustment sanity check

If the timing has retarded, the throttle plates may have been opened to regain the Idle Speed, that by itself is major cause of Dieseling. I will assume it has Electronic Ignition, so no Points to wear, but the timing will retard as the Timing Chain wears and stretches.

    Axle rating help.

If you really want to upgrade, ditch the Springs and get a Torsion Axle. It is basically an Independent Suspension. I changed to a Torsion Axle in 20015, and it is a much nicer towing experience

What is the main cause of an outboard that's hard to start again after it's already warm

You need to verify that the Spark can jump a 7'16" gap repeatedly. If it can't then there is a Problem. Check all connections, and grounds, including those to the engine block This one is a long shot, but it can cause Difficulty in starting. A bad Crankshaft Seal under the Flywheel.

    Chaparral experts in here ?

On my I/O the Sending unit is quite a ways back on the tank(makes for a very inaccurate fuel gauge) and is about 2 ft forward of the front of the engine itself, pretty much under the front of the Bench Seat

    Chaparral experts in here ?

With the Engine Cover/Sunpad open, can you see the Fuel Lines, and Fuel Fill Hose/Pipe go under the Floor/Deck? If so, can you get a Mirror and Light down there to try and see the location of the Sending unit?

    3.7 to 4.3 swap

Lake Boating where the waves get a little nasty is where I boat. The Boat actually holds 22(statue)mph very well. I run at that speed a lot as it allows me to stand up and get some cooling on Hot Days, 20c and above. It is propped to hit the upper end of it's rpm range, with a 1.51:1 gearbox. It...

    3.7 to 4.3 swap

Small engines have to spin higher Rpms to get the same power that a bigger engine gets at lower rpm. The Extra Torque from the greater Displacement is what bigger boats need most. Given a Choice between a 220hp 4.3 and a 220hp 5 Liter, I will take the 5 liter(though I consider it too small for...

    3.7 to 4.3 swap

I agree, with Bondo. Nothing Less than a 5.7 in 21 footer. It is less likely to take forever to get on plane, and it will have a Higher Top End which is always nice if you have to get somewhere in a hurry, or away from a Storm

    Trailer lights troubleshooting help

Since you didn't put the Trailer on the Ball, you might not have a ground, often the ground wire to the Tow Vehicle breaks but the Lights still work, cause it is using the Hitch to complete the Circuit. 50 yrs ago my Dad never used a 4 pin connecter for trailer wiring, He used the 3 Prang...
