    The 3 bronze bearings in the 5-1/2 and 6 hp are well designed / sized for the job.-----Have had numerous of those engines apart for inspection.----Never an issue with them.

    Pull the bypass cover , inspect pistons / rings,------Failure of impeller may have scored the pistons.

    Some folks spend thousands each year playing golf.----Nothing to show for it at the end of the season.-----Some will spend time working on a boat to give to the grandkids.----All depends on your upbringing and your priorities I guess

    Correct ----That insignificant amount of oil on ficht had nothing to do with operation of a 2 stroke engine.

    Correct----On direct injection motors only the gasoline is injected into the cylinder after ports are closed.-----Oil is totally seperate and inhectted where needed.-----It can be said that these motors are in 4 stroke mode for part of the crank rotation.

    The times and products gave changed.----It is what was available at the time.----Heck my dad remembered when folks talked about a new radio.-----Some said that you would be able to see people talk on a radio.

    The control only has a throttle cable.-----Will not work with a standard shift motor.

    By the looks of the fishing line on the lower unit you have to wonder if the previous owner looked at it or did maintenance ?----Yes they are a nice / simple / easy to maintain motor.-----Even the electric shift / reliable is simple for me.

    I would do a complete inspection before deciding on materials and a path forward.

    Motor will need a complete evaluation before spending beer tokens on it.---Compression test.-----Ignition coils.----Carburetor clean.-----New impeller ----Type C-gear oil ( premium blend ) for lower unit.-----Oil container must say " for electric shift " on it.

    It was a wonderful motor when new.----Electric shift with generator.-----Model # is found above the transom clamps or on the starboard transom bracket.----Find it and post it.-----There could be a lot of work to make the boat usable.

    The engines are 1984 model I believe.-------Post the compression test values.-----They will need new impellers before the season starts.---Oil injection system ( if equipped with that ) must be checked before roaring away from the ramp.-----These are wonderful simple motors in my opinion.

    Drove my pick-up home one day for just over an hour.-----Tried to start it 20 minutes later and not a chance.----New battery solved it.

    These coils are very reliable.-----Plentiful good used ones in my area.----Dealers don't bother to remove them from parts motors that I have picked up.
