    You do not loosen the screw that holds the points down.----On that Johnson the cam screw adjusts the points with that screw tight.----Learnt that over 50 years ago.---Fact is still true today

    A 1974 model 25 HP has 2 sets of breaker points ( mechanical switches ) under the flywheel.-----They are set to open to about 0.020" maximum gap.

    On a single lever , the control first shifts to forward.------No movement of the throttle cable at first.------You do have cables hooked up correctly ??-----Any pictures or video ?

    Some folks use the " it must be the coils " approach.-----Most start with the ---" it must be the carburetor " approach.----Simple trouble shooting finds the issues.

    Agreed.----revving that motor in neutral can cause issues.-----But sadly there is no way to convince people of that fact.----They will not believe it.

    Thirty five years ago I tried a sierra impeller on a little 2 HP Johnson.-----Took it out and tossed it in the garbage.

    1976 Johnson 70hp will only run low rpm after warming up.

    The primer bulb is a simple manual pump to fill the carburetors for start up.------It saves the starter motor from doing that.-----Or on a manual start motor it saves your shoulders.-----And the bulb does nothing when motor is running.-----And the bulb does not stay hard when motor is running !!

    Are muffs available for 1959 5.5HP Golden Jubilee?

    Find that plate on the side of the lower unit.-----Find the main water intake screen behind the prop.----Make and adapter for that plate for muffs or a garden hose fitting.-----Block main intake with tape.-----Test run.-----Don't forget to remove tape.

    There should be a small black wire from small solenoid terminal to ground.--I can not see your motor.-----But that is the way it is wired on motors that I have !---
