    confused about transom thickness overall.

    fiberglass boats 2-1/4" thick. aluminum boats - 2.0 to 2-1/4" which is the thickness of 1-1/2" wood and the skins. if you are replacing the transom wood with aluminum tubing, make sure you fully understand transom loading and how it transfers from the prop to the boat.

    welcome aboard. as indicated, if trying to suck from a bucket, you will just burn up the impeller. you need muffs. if you want to use a bucket, get a bucket big enough to put the whole boat in it so the impeller starts with water 8" above it to prime the pump. factory manual is a great...
