    The --" mexican fellow "------Factory manual clearly says to put the round gaskets into the valve body first.----I believe there is a spot for them.-----So that would put them UNDER the flange of the thermostat as you say.

    These lower units are the same year to year.----Look for a seal kit for an 85 listing.---Not there ----try 87.---You get the idea.

    Find the fuse near the starter solenoid.-----Fuse is about 5/8" long.

    I have seen the carbon seal on the bottom cracked.----Even found that seal assembled wrong on one parts only motor.

    You may need to investigate this.-----I do not believe the shift rod has any play in neutral.

    Everybody seems to have a different approach to cosmetics on a boat.------I for one would do a thorough inspection of transom / stringers and that FORCE engine.-----The boat is 30 years old and there may bell be hidden issues.------Paint is the last thing to worry about.
