there is no "likely cause" you need to do a leakdown test to determine what is the reason here are possible reasons (not in any particular order) leaking exhaust manifold causing rusty valve or valve seat (if so, other valves may be close behind) broken rings hole in a piston from detonation...

Frozen and busted blocks in Texas

There are 580,000 boaters in Texas. Not a single one of those boats were winterized....... Since about 250,000 of those boats are I/Os and only about 50,000 are moored..... There are about 200,000 motors that have suffered a thermal declination related phase-shift inspired block busting event...

    Cracked Block???

if you didnt drain all 5 drain locations (intake manifold t-stat cross-over, block drains and manifold drains). expect to have a busted block...... and exhaust manifolds regarding home-owners insurance, that is between you and the insurance company.

OMC 2.5L milky oil after short time

I would never trust the manifold myself. only way to test the block is to pressure test it, or take to a machine shop and mag-particle it.

    Cracked spark plug porcelain-timing?

wait a minute.....back the truck up. generally stock 305 heads have too small of valves for a 350 and have too small a combustion chamber to run on pump gas without the motor detonating like teenager boys at their first peep show. what head casting do you have? very specific. if you have...

    Cracked spark plug porcelain-timing?

if the new 5.7 is a vortec, your plugs are way too short.

    Cracked spark plug porcelain-timing?

loose spark plugs would prevent proper heat sinking and the plugs get hot, cracking the porcelain

gotta go with new on the vertical driveshaft. the internal splines wear, then strip and leave you stranded needing a tow. 100% of the vertical driveshafts will fail - its a design flaw. the used one you bought will most likely fail soon as well. look at the splines.

    Running spare hot wires....

I would pull some poly chord thru to allow you to easily pull what you want in the future. I have pulled spare wires in the past, howeve most of the time what I thought I would need in the future is not what I actually needed

Merc 4.3l timing question, BTDC mark

first, AD has you straighted out on the timing tape and RH vs LH motors. secondly, post #2 would indicate that you did not shunt the two wires and put the motor in base timing mode.

Why is my boat sitting lower than the waterline ?

Welcome aboard. as GM stated, additional weight on board is the only thing that will cause it to sit lower. pull the boat and weigh it. compare it to specs. to sit 2-3" lower on a 25' boat would mean you have about 200 gallons of water on board so prepare for a full gut-n-restoration...
