    Tips On Replacing Starter

Tie a string/small rope to it. Tie off the rope and it’ll hold it up so you can remove and install the bolts.

I was over due for this to happen.

Have to figure out how the water got in there. Portable cans have a vent on the cap, it lets water in if left open. My neighbors pontoon had water issues twice. Got it all cleaned out and told them to close the vent when done for the day. Two weeks later, same thing. They left the cap loose and...

    Stupid me, no oil

Had a leak on the intake myself. Had the heads re-done and they milled them flat. I used the end gaskets for the intake that came with the kit. Turns out when you shave the heads, the gasket is too thick. It squished out. My fix was to remove the remains of the gasket without removing the intake...

    Tips On Replacing Starter

That video was a bit funny. On a 120-140 it's easier than a v-8. I've taken and tied a 1/4" line to starters, drug them through the bilge after cleaning the bilge and pulled the starter up in place with the string. Then lay on your belly and screw around getting the bolts in. Never had to pull a...

    Where did my oil go?

Person needing a job at below minimum wages. And they have no abilities ????? Ah yes. We hire people who claim to know what they are doing, but it dosent always work out. Pay is a fair amount above min wage but these people fluff their applications up a bit too much. Within a week we get them...

    Where did my oil go?

Glad you got it fixed. Note to self, never take a previous owner for his word. I just got rid of a 21’ Sylvan that I acquired for fre, no known history. The guy I gave it to,I told him that I don’t know anything about it, he checked it over, took it out on Lake Superior three times. About 60...

    Broken gear lube fitting

Yes, it’s a bear to lay in there and do the job. I’ve never removed the motor to do that particular job. Remember to not drop the e-ring!

    Broken gear lube fitting

It can be done without removing the motor. Done more than a few. I drop the c-clip more than once, hard to find it if you do. Be careful! They make a brass fitting to replace the plastic one, get that! It's a real bear to get the job done. Poor planning from mercury! Good luck.

bow navigation wire runs through the railing… where does it come into the main section?

I’ve personally ran wires through the rails. It’s a bugger of a job and some go easy. usually I pick the first stanchion. They can be run under the headliner or wall sections if they can be loosened enough to get in there. A couple of them I could run it through the chain locker and down through...

Doesn’t go straight, left to right back and forth at idle?

What Bondo said . All of them do that, till I learned to just hold the wheel straight I was oversteering a lot. They will stay relatively on corse with little input from you.

12' Aluminum V-Hull - Issues porpoising and planing

Put your battery and fuel tank as close to the bow as you can. Small boats are subject to load. My duck boat requires the fuel tank and battery just ahead of the back seat.

    Older Boats

The main issue with older 2 strokes is the labor cost. You spend say 4 hours re-building a carb and tune up, at $100+ an hour it adds up to you may as well bought a new smaller outboard.

Bizarre starter behavior (won't "bench test" on motor)

Make sure the mounting surface is rust free, and the grounds at the back of the block are clean. Just looking at them dosent count, remove and clean them.

Bizarre starter behavior (won't "bench test" on motor)

Some cheap jumper cables are thick with insulation but have a real small wire in there. Junk.

Motor knocking. Mercruiser 3.0 alpha 1

Yes. Mine had the fiber gear, about 1/3 of the teeth were damaged enough to warrant replacing them. I went with metal gears. Really not that loud but I insulated the doghouse pretty well.
