OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

Thank you for confirming. So how would the boat behave with that drive? Better, worse or about the same?

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

A 3.8l v6. The seller was insistent that it would fit my boat.

How do I add gear oil to multiple fill plugs on OMC stern drive.

A new water pump kit was installed last year and water drained from the engine. I see 2 back to back seals for the ball gear, An o ring for the exhaust cover, and o ring for the exhaust and an o ring for the top cover that may be possible culprits. Parts number 21, 27, 38, and 57.

How do I add gear oil to multiple fill plugs on OMC stern drive.

I did the fill procedure on all 3 last year. Since then it’s had about 1.5 hours of run time on land and in water. Some may have seen my latest thread where the lower gear case blew up. I checked the oil in the upper gear case and intermediate housing. Inner mediate housing looked the same as...

My OMC, 305 V8 stinger has a Prop Lyft problem

When I rebuilt my tilt clutch pack, I remember there was a pin/rod that had a screw I would tighten to increase pressure on the clutch packs. Too tight and it wouldn’t move. Too lose and it wouldn’t move. I believe it was part no69 in this diagram.

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

The lower gear case has those inner damaged markings on both ends. I took it to a shop and they said oil would probably seep through those cracks later on and any factory bearing tolerance would be out of spec. Here’s a complete unit. Says for use in stringer models with 800 v6 or v8. Some...

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

Which part? The lower gear case housing? Sterndrive.info has a rebuilt unit for $1900. It would cost $1200 to rebuild my current one but it may not be good.

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

I’ve got the lower drive fully removed. Hopefully the shift cable doesn’t give too much trouble when going back together. I need to get a bearing puller tool for the prop shaft bearing holder and long c clip pliers. The manual does show part no6 is attached to the driveshaft, so it should all...

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

I see the nut for the shaft on the diagram. Part 31. It looks like the prop shaft has 2 c clips holding it in. Once those 2 c clips are removed, the prop shaft slides out and I can stick a wrench into the drive to remove the pinion gear nut. Correct? Part no6 is the one I can’t remove. I saw a...

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

The parts diagram lists the forward gear, reverse gear and pinion gear. I’m guessing the pinion gear is on the lower driveshaft. Maybe the forward and reverse gears are ok because the prop still rotates in either direction when put into to gear and the drive shaft has all the play and is the...

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

I looked at it the upper driveshaft in the upper gear case, the splines look in tact as do the splines on the shaft I posted, known as “driveshaft” per the parts diagram. The 2 gears I listed is what came up when I searched the part number into eBay. I didn’t try to start it when I removed the...

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

It’s not freeze damage. It had no water all winter and the housing was smooth beforehand. Yea I can idle and rev up and shift into gears but I think the drive gear is slipping. Something may go on with the engine. Unless the binding drive gear was causing the engine to bog down. New plugs and...

OMC sterndrive not moving in gear.

Finally took my 1984 sterndrive out today. First 10 minutes were fine at 4k rpm. Then it died and would stay moving at 1800-2K rpms. Anything above and it would shortly die in about 30 seconds. Figured it was a dirty carb. Parked the boat for a few hours and started going back to the dock and...

How to tel if boat will over heat in the water

HAHA. They probably wouldn’t like that. Everything looks good on paper for the cooling system and the engine itself. No over heating at idle. New impeller and thermostat. Good water flow when running on the muffs. New plugs and dist cap/rotor. 150 psi on all cylinders. Starts right up. And...

How to tel if boat will over heat in the water

What is ideal temperature when on the water? 170°-185°? The ground is going to a ground block I added. The instructions call for chassis ground, but the ground block provides acceptable ground for other accessories. Unless I need to run that ground wire directly to the engine…?

How to tel if boat will over heat in the water

Bringing this thread back to life. I did order a Faria gauge, but the temperature marking did not match my original gauge, so I didn’t use it. With the use of adapters, I used a sunpro gauge with sensor similar to this one. It may be the same gauge, I am not sure...

How to launch stern drive safely?

Yea I am over thinking it. The ball gears don’t look easy to replace and I’m trying to avoid that. I don’t think I’ll be in this position much with drive half way, but thank you for all the info.

    OMC engine water flow.

Ok great. Yes the few times I started the engine and shut it off after not seeing water, probably added up to 15 seconds. I started it again today and water flow was delayed a few seconds but then started flowing normally. I’m guessing that is normal and everything is working properly. Thanks.

    OMC engine water flow.

I have a 1984 3.8l v61984 OMC sterndrive-382SPMRCRJS code. I replaced the impeller last year and didn’t really start it afterwards. I started it today with the muffs and had no water coming out of any engine hoses with boat off or on and no water from the impeller. I would briefly start the...

How to launch stern drive safely?

Ok great that it’s working as it should. So to to the take off in shallow water. I move the throttle to the idle position in which the propeller first begins to spin pretty slowly and keep the throttle in that position until I can drop the drive all the way and take off? I have not looked at...
