1969--85hp Starflite, model 85993E possible carb swap?

I'm partial to NGK. The ones that came in my 1984 115 Merc, were still in it, with about 600hrs on them when I traded it in in 1998. As for Champion, I wouldn't them even if a Gun where to my head, unless there was no other choice

    Johnson CD-12 5.5HP

There is nothing that grounds the Ignition as the Throttle is turn to stop. It is simply the Retarded Spark that Kills the Motor. Go over your work again. Is there a chance you have shorted the Points to Ground?

1969--85hp Starflite, model 85993E possible carb swap?

In the Mid 70 and 80s, a lot of Owners were trying to swap the Other Way. I will admit it is a Pain to Adjust 4 Idle Mixture Needles, and the Fixed Jets eliminated that, but if you boated higher than Sea Level, the Idle Mix was too Rich, and often made for a Cantankerous Motor.

    Oil selection

The Marine Industry does have a Cert Standard for 4 Stroke Oils. FC-W. A lot of the Marine Engines, at least those with Raw Water Cooling do operate at lower Temps than a Car/Truck Engine, thereby subjecting the Oil to a Different set of Parameters. Of course there are those that think Oil is...

    One last try

I always found Standing Starts in just over Knee Deep Water far easier than Dock Starts. Just kept about 6-7 feet of Slack, and yelled 'Hit It'. Only failed Once in many Years... Granted I wasn't using a Ski that held my back Foot Prisoner.

    Loading onto a roller trailer

What Brand is this Trailer? EZLoader Roller Trailers are easy to Launch from and Load On. I think Load Rite is similar. Far better than a Trailer with a bunch of Keel Rollers waiting to wreck Havoc on a Hull. I have had EZloader Bunk Trailers(no Keel wreckers) the past 27 yrs and they are easy...

    Mercury 2-Stroke Oils

When the Optimax and FICHT came out TCW-3 was all there was. The Engine Makers Oils Exceeded the TCW-3 spec, but it turned out even they weren't up to the Task for the DI Engines

    Boat performance

Just out of Curiosity, what Prop is on it? Is there Oil in the Gearcase? I asked that cause my brother about 50 yrs ago, ran my Dad's Motor without any Gear Oil and it wouldn't get on Plane either. FYI, that motor needs to be running at 6000rpm or close to it, to perform well So if it has...

    Mercury 2-Stroke Oils

Being that that your engine is DI Engine, I would stick to the DI Oil, even though Quicksilver Premium Plus is a very good Oil. DI engine throw a whole bunch of Curves as to what is required by the Oil. If you look at the DFI Oil Label, you may or may not find a TCW-3 Cert on it. I know it isn't...
