    E/J 9.5 pump head

Then maybe you can answer a minor question I have. The stop button & wiring were trashed on this and now I can't recall if the wires were originally run above the linkages & shifter lockout, or were routed underneath. It seems no matter where I place them they're in the way.

    E/J 9.5 pump head

Looks like the consensus is..."maybe". Am I the only one to run one of these in a barrel, with the fuel tank on the ground? I guess so since nobody said "it works for me".

    E/J 9.5 pump head

This '71 9.5 I'm working on has been slowing down & stopping after a couple minutes running in a barrel. Everything checks out on this motor but I haven't got into the carb yet. It runs so well when first started I was hoping I didn't need to rebuild the carb. Somewhere in the service manual is...

    What type fuel hose?

I was watching some OB repair videos on YouTube recently and one guru mentioned using "military-spec" fuel line. What is that? I was going to re-plumb my '71 with urethane from the local hardware store but I have to admit I would prefer black rubber hose for the vintage look IF it won't degrade...

Need to replace outer transom board

Yeah I assumed it was intended to a sacrificial part because of the ridiculously thin plywood that was used but it would have been better had they used bolts instead of rivets to attach it. I've seen a lot of really ugly attempts to repair or replace this piece over the years. Hopefully I can...

Need to replace outer transom board

First of all... I assume this plate has a name but I couldn't find it. Anyways mine is crumbling so I drilled out the 4 rivets holding it to the inner transom board (itself in good condition) and removed it to use as a template. It's a scant ¼" thick so I want to replace it with a thicker piece...

    Sure--why?

    9.5 Ready for wet test

I still don't know if the "stumble & stop" when in gear is caused by Carb Heat (condensers) Exhaust leak Lack of gear lube. I'm hoping it was the lack of lube bc it's the only thing I've found that was an actual problem.

    9.5 Ready for wet test

I never wanted to become an expert at ignition testing, point gaping, timing plate removal & cleaning, impeller replacement, gearbox service, wiring repair or location parts for a 50 year old motor, but here I am. And when I return from vacation my carb rebuild kit will finally be here. I've...

9.5 ignition plate alignment now wrong

I'm getting quicker at pulling off that timing plate. Now that I know that the roller on the throttle arm presses the cam follower against the timing cam I'll be watching that everything is lined up as I wiggle the timing plate back on. I had removed the timing plate so that I could...

9.5 ignition plate alignment now wrong

After looking at more parts diagrams & a couple ebay listings for "cam follower" I think I know what happened (but not HOW). The cam follower is the white arm & finger which is now under my timing plate. The "roller" contacts the follower. I need to take that damned timing plate off again and...

9.5 ignition plate alignment now wrong

Can someone post a clear photo of theirs? I can't tell a thing from that 50 yo manual. My roller is *parallel* to the edge of the cam plate. That doesn't seem right yet it doesn't look bent or out of place. The edge of the plate ends up sliding into the middle of the "U" between three roller &...

9.5 ignition plate alignment now wrong

It was in fwd for the video but the gear wouldn't affect that the cam & roller don't line up.

9.5 ignition plate alignment now wrong

While tinkering with this OB the past couple weeks I've had the timing plate off at least 3 times with no problems reassembling. THIS TIME something went sideways. The carb throttle follower now wants to roll under the cam plate. I don't know what I did different but now my throttle range is...

    Identify this motor?

You can but that lower unit on Amazon and mount any standard ww head to it. Probably why there's no labels. They're stupid cheap.

Vintage 9.5: Can you set points with a timing light?

A little. I'm a metrologist by trade. Calibrations. Accurate measurements using first principles is what I do every day. The point gap sets your ignition timing but it's a very crude process and the way most people do it doesn't involve the timing marks at all. That's what I meant by...
