    So the "pointy tool method" to gap the points. I agree that will get you the best mechanical approximation of correct timing. I guess if one wants to fine-tune from there the only choice is trial & error. Now I have a better understanding why nobody bothers to go beyond approximate timing.

    What have you circled there? I've been curious if that square socket in the casting has any purpose. I've used it to crudely try to keep the flywheel from rotating when torqueing the top nut--but it feels risky.

    It seems like there would be proof in the form of a photo. Or service manual drawing. I just googled about a dozen more photos and none had anything attached there. Small outboards don't normally have "options" that would require additional mounting bosses. That stuff just adds weight.

    I doubt I'm going to find 'correct' oil for this locally. I think assembly lube has all the correct properties...agree? I have a lot of lubricants on hand but most of them are at the ends of the viscosity spectrum--greases & penetrating oils.
