    Maybe you put to much fuel in the spark plug holes and it is to rich mixture. Have you put the right HT wire to the right cylinder? Is the flywheel key in good condition, not shared. Does the spark jump 1/4-3/8in in atmosphere?

If a rubber tip there is a brass seat in the carb body and if no rubber tip there is a rubber or maybe a viton seat in the body.     If the needle is all in metal there is a rubber seal in the seat in the carb body. If the needle has a rubber tip there is no seal in the body. Check with a flashlight if there is a seal in the carb body or not, someone else (if the engine is new to you) could have put in a wrong needle.

    Yes you should be able to do that BUT the shift rod connection is different. The 79 gear house has a pin coupler with a cotter pin. The old 66 gear house has a threaded coupler between the shift rod lower and the shift rod intermidiat. You have to change the shift rod lower, it is the easiest way.

    Replace the reed valves with new stainless steel valve paddles. They will last for a very long time. In mid 90.es they replaced the stainless steel ones with plastic typs ones, but in my experience they do not last as good as the stainless typs. You might find used ones at Ebay or buy new ones.

    As alldodge says check all cables, terminal lugs and grounding. If you try to run the starter direct from the battery with jump cables with clamps you have to have really good connections to the clamps and large connection area.

    Disconnect kill switch wire from CDI box and check for spark. If no spark then check output voltage from the stator. It should be 180VDC DVA (with a VOM that read DVA or with a DVA adapter connected to a VOM) or more. If the reading is 180VDC or more from stator the CDI box is bad.
