Re: Sea Ray f16

that is a sea doo.....bombardie type hull....
It looks similar. It is a 1997 sea ray sea rayder f16. It had a new (re manufactured) power head
installed in 2009 and the motor only has 9.4 hours on it. It is being sold by a trustworthy marina
therefore I will not need to bring along a mechanic to look at it with me.

Any kind of warranty period? Even with that, as has been said already, parts (by research) do seem to be hard to come by. I'd ask them their opinion as to why the powerhead had to be replaced so soon. It may be a good buy. I'm sure you'd have lots of fun with it if it's reliable!

I will have to find out on the warranty if any. The powerhead wasn't replaced "so soon". The
original engine was a 97' and it was replaced in 2009. I am not familiar with these types of motors but i think a powerhead having to be replaced after 12 years isn't very soon.

Can you take the boat out , and run it? If not, then you might be throwing money at something that is a salesmans word.

The dealer will let me test drive it. They are a well known dealer. The price is firm because they are selling it on consignment and it costs the owner 5 grand for the new powerhead

Re: Sea Ray f16

I sold my SJ 95 powered jet boat for $3000, the SJ 120 went for $3300. $4k isn't completely out of reason with the new powerhead, and dealership vs private party costs.

Sorry, I misread your earlier post. I think one thing to keep in mind is the low availability of parts if needed. That being said, now that I realize the powerhead was replaced much later than I originally thought, I'd be interested in it. As you said, you aren't expecting or wanting 50 mph, and you can do things performance/handling wise that will be lots of fun. If you take it for a spin, take a couple of friends so you can see how it does with a full load. There can be a big difference in performance with one person vs. 3 or 4. I think it'd be a very fun boat to cruise around the lake with some friends. Also, you have the extra bonus of no prop to accidently get cut on. If you have the money to buy and it all checks out good, you could be in for a lot of fun next summer! Btw, it doesn't hurt to offer a few hundred lower. I realize it's consignment, but they can call the seller and give them your offer. Most consignment are sold on a percentage basis, so it cuts into their fee.

Thanks for the reply! I want the boat to move, but be safe in rough water. No need for 50mph
here. They have lowered the price from $5,000 to $4,000 and now its at $3,000. If I find a
mechanic that is willing to work on the boat for me I will most likely go for it.

What exactly is your definition of "rough water"? I believe those jet boats have very little deadrise and low freeboard. Probably not the best choice for rough water.

I mean 3' waves and white caps. I boat on a lake with 35'+ cabin cruisers and cigarette boats
pushing 40 feet. It is one of the most populated lakes in the country.

Just about anything would be safe in those conditions. Something with a bit more deadrise and weight would probably ride better, but you should be fine with what you're looking at.

Re: Sea Ray f16

I have a 96 seaswirl with the omc115turbojet she is a fun little boat keywords little. These things have some funny handleing traits to me anyway.
Sure was a trip the first time docking the thing. Low freeboard is a draw back for rough water mine has been 3/4 full of water after a rather harsh submarine(going 35mph then full reverse).
As others have said load it down to make sure it will still do what you want/need.

I test drove six small jets before i decided to get the seaswirl all of them felt like they needed more power with the exception of the twin 110 seadoo.
However it used so much fuel in the short time i drove it on the test drive I dont think i would want to feed all the time.

That is one reason I like the sea ray. One engine. Those older 2 stroke twin engine sea doo jet boats drank a lot of fuel

On Hopatcong I remember taking ours out mostly on the week days, it was frustrating as I would go through a shallow part like the bridge area and need to get wet to clear the weeds as the Sea Ray had no ability to drive after picking them up in the no-wake zone.

It's a rough lake at times, my 19ft will re-align your kidneys! Be careful.

Yeah it can get crazy at times. You had the f16?

Yes, you can read my assessment on PG 1 of this post.

Will you be 16 next year so you can have your license? I would really recommend you shop anything with a prop or just a general PWC over the F16. My Sea Doo never had the weed issues the F16 had and dont kid yourself with the fuel consumption. That boat drank ALOT of gas by anyones standard!

Thanks. I was concerned about fuel consumption. I have a small fishing boat now. I took the boat safety coarse and have my license. In April i will turn 16 and will have an unrestricted license. Now i am limited to 10hp.

All depends on how you drive it... I've had sj 90/95/120/175 powered boats. The little 90-120's were VERY good on gas, as long as you didn't hold them wide open. Do that, and its going to burn its rated 10% hp/hour. The 175 is no different, hold that wide open and its rated for 19 gallons per hour. A 175 merc outboard will get pretty much exactly that. They have a perception from people of being very thirsty, its far more of the right hand problem.

My current sj175 boat is 17.5 feet long and gets 4.36 mpg at best cruise. That is right in line or better when compared to a similar powered outboard boat. Jets don't like going slow though, your mileage absolutely sucks at less than plane and slow plane speed. My best cruise 4.36 mpg is at 32 mph.

Thanks. I had a 23' sea ray sorrento with a 5.7 litre merc in it so the gas mileage should't be that alarming to me. But I guess that if you push these 120's hard they will burn up your wallet quick.
